I would paint the front porch door the same dark color as the shutters. A ceiling light over the front porch door that hangs down just a bit would add some importance.

You might consider hiring a landscape architect to give you some ideas about the steps and the hill. This could be very interesting if landscaped properly. You could do the work yourself over a period of years.

Is there a service road in the back?

It seems that you have some erosion issues, too. The rail road ties are not suitable for a main entrance. What about relocating the steps to the other side closer to the door? I would create a series of terraces with landings for surch a long walk.

I agree with hiring a landscape architect since this could a major construction with retaining walls and multiple levels. Also it's difficult to provide detailed solutions without having a topography plan of your site.

Well I have to thank you all for your comments. This was my childhood home and it's been on that hill like that for 60 + years. Hard to imagine. There is a driveway far to the right out of the picture. I like many of the photos you all sent with the cascading steps. We are trying to fix this up a bit for my mom so our budget is quite small. However we are willing to do some work. Does anyone have an opinion about possible changes to the roof line that might give the house a feel of having a front?

Oh I forgot to mention the house overlooks a lake across the street.
