I recommend checking with the tile manufacturer for specific installation instructions. Also, there may be a heat issue as well. I would imagine that the metal heats up when the fireplace is in use, this may factor in to what kind of adhesive or backing is recommended, if at all, and whether or not it will last. Good luck.

We are a tile manufacturer and SH-Interiors is spot on with the assumption that there is a heat issue. However, I do not think it is as complicated as you might think!

You have the option to use backing, however you can also install directly to the metal if you wish. The issue there would be what adhesives to use, and with that I would recommend using Latapoxy 310 Stone Adhesive. You can look at the specs below, but in short it is a stone adhesive that is used frequently in fireplaces (and is capable of adhering to metal).

We do sell glass tiles in many varieties!

For Glass tile to Metal backing I would suggest using something like Loctite Glass Glue, however you have to keep in mind that above the firebox temperatures can reach 170-180 degrees (which limits what can be mounted there). Glass is a possibility but needs a substrate otherwise the tiles and grout may shatter.
