Jenn-aire Icemaker Problems

I'm having problems with the icemaker in my Jenn-aire cabinet depth french door refrigerator. It randomly stops working and then randomly starts working again. While it was still under warranty I had it fixed once and the 'Maytag Repair Man' replaced a valve. I also thought he was going to destroy my cabinets as he got angry and started forcing the unit back in. He then started telling me I should buy the extended warranty for another $170some odd dollars. He was trying to convince me I had bought an inferior product. I finally asked him, 'You're telling me I paid extra for a Jenn-aire and I got a piece of crap?' (Not the expletive I used.) He said 'Yes you did!' Not the image of the Maytag repairman you get on TV!

Anyway, I digress, the icemaker worked until the warranty ran out (I didn't buy the extended warranty) and now it will randomly quit, then start working, and then quit again. I'd call out another repairman if I knew it would get fixed once and for all, but I wonder if it is something else.

Anyone else have problems with their Icemaker???

Thanks,

Scott

Interesting. I had problems from the get-go (that have never been fixed) with my Jade ice maker. The Jade, at that time (since under new ownership), was just a dressed up Jenn-Air, with a few extra features.

Update: My icemaker is working again after stopping 3 days ago. Here's what I did last night...
    (1) I changed the filter. Although they recommend changing every 6 months, and it had only been 5, Jenn-air (and others) have said that the water flow slows over time as the filter get used up - maybe you'll notice that the flow of water from the dispenses increases somewhat after you change the filter. Even though it didn't seem like a big difference, there does need to be enough water pressure for the icemaker to work.
    (2) I removed the icemaker bin and made sure there was no more ice inside the tray or any components I could feel with my hand. I also jostled the plastic parts around a bit, in case anything had gotten "frozen". After flipping the arm up (in the off position) and then back down (on) a few times, low and behold...I heard the water line start to fill up the icemaker. We had new ice this morning!
I hope this advice works for someone else too. There will be NO charge for this service call! :-)

I just got my Jenn-aire cabinet depth french door refrigerator about 1.5 days ago and its great (quiet, looks nice) except the icemaker has done nothing... I don't hear a peep out of it - sounds like its never turned on. The water inside the door works great so I know there is water.

We are planning to get a Jenn-aire CD FD fridge but are getting a separate under-counter icemaker, so we won't use the one in the fridge. What about the rest of the fridge and freezer? Any problems before I order?

Just an update: they came out soon after I posted that it was broken, fixed it in no time and its been working perfectly since.

I have had mine for 4 months and knock on wood. No problems. I had terrible problems with fridg freezing my food in last one. Maytag!!

    mystery,

Funny, my new CD FD Jenn-Air was plugged in for the first time yesterday. The water works fine, and it has made *some* ice, but very little. After about 12 hrs it had made maybe enough ice to cover the bottom of the container in a single layer. In the 12 hrs since then it has made about half that much.

The instruction book says it makes a "batch" of ice about every 3 hours. How much is a "batch? Is that one "row" of ice cubes (6 or 8)? If so, maybe it is working as "intended". At that rate, the two people who live yere can use ice faster than that..

I think it can take a day or two for the icemaker to start making ice...least ways, that was the way it was with frigs made several years ago.

If the waterline wasn't flushed when the refrigerator was installed, it can slow ice production pretty quickly. Always make sure that the delivery crew runs some water out of the end of the supply line before they hook up to the refrigerator. It will likely still take 24-48 hours to hit full ice production capacity. Changing the filter at the first sign of trouble is worth a try, but they're not cheap, either.

Hopefully the Maytag folks will read this blog. That repairman doesn't instill much confidence.

I have the same fridge as OP; occasionally, a cube (crescent?) of ice gets stuck in the tines of the machine, causing a hum. I don't know if the ice production stops, because the hum is so annoying I pick out the ice ASAP with a knife. This is a regular occurrence during ice season.

Everybody has ice maker problems sooner or later.

Our ice maker leaks water into the tray and forms a big block of ice.

Patrick Wilmot, you have a bad inlet valve (located where the water line connects to the back of the refrigerator).

This is the problem we were having. My husband cleaned the part in the back as it was full of dust/fuzz and it's been fine since. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0mSgwzxP8A

Jenn-Air is a piece of crap, I have fixed lots of machines, and found this one to be expensive and trashy. Don't waste your money.

Gitanos, you have more experience than I do with this, but my experience leads me to disagree with you. As you can see from when my earlier post was made, I bought my Jenn-Air in 2008 when I was remodeling my kitchen. At the time the choice of refrigerator gave me the most doubt. It seemed that all the non-luxury brands had lots of strikes against them. Many brands (including Jenn-Air) turned out to be the same mfg (I forget who) with the differences being cosmetic. I picked the Jenn-Air among them because the handles fit my design best.

Since then I had no significant problems until last year when my ice maker failed. I was distressed to find that the only solution offered was replacement. That was more $ than I liked to pay. But it was the only thing after 7 years. That doesn't seem so bad.

The only other "problem" I have had is that the "replace filter" indicator light has never worked. But that is just slightly annoying.

Perhaps the newer Jenn-Air machines are different.

I have a Jennair Rise, under a year old (JFFCC72EHL or similar). It never made ice (system froze). I've had a repair man visit three times, replace the door once... still no ice. Finally Jennair replaced the entire refrigerator. Guess what? Ice isn't working, this time freezing in large clumps at the bottom and jamming up the system. It's been a year and I still have no ice maker. I think Jennair rushed their R&D. It's a $5,000 fridge, it should work like a dream.
