I can't tell you how much I appreciate the reply. At least someone is on my side in this! I am on my fifth stain sample and can't seem to get that rich dark look I"m going for. Do you think it's the mahogony? Or am I going to need to start blending a custom color? Sorry for the myriad of questions.. Would a designer be willing to take on such a small job as to help choose colors?

The colors were selected by the architect Michael Minadeo... he might be willing to share the exact colors with you if interested...

I am about to install Cobblestone (black/slate stain over maple) Cabinets, and I chose a darker Granite countertop (black with grey, taupe and blue). I can't wait. I had the same concerns based on other peoples opinions. Ultimately, it is my kitchen, and I like 'dark and murky'. I am adding enough glass cabinetry with cream dishes inside, lighter wood floor (Amendoim), light paint, and some bling on my ceiling to offset the dark cabs and counter. I keep telling myself... "Don't be afraid of the dark". ;-)

We had a black stain over birch for bathroom cabinets and put a dark granite countertop on the vanity with a white sink. It looks fabulous! The floor is gray tile with darker gray veining placed diagonally. Very happy with the results and plan to use a similar combination in a new large master bathroom. Eventually, the kitchen will get the black stained cabinets too, but I think I prefer a light countertop to prepare meals in the kitchen.
