Gas ranges: KitchenAid Architect II vs GE Profile/Cafe vs ??

Hi there. I think this topic has come up many times, but the last such thread I could find was dealing with last year's models, so I thought I'd bring it up again.

I'm in the market for a good, sub-$2000 gas range. The 2 I've been focusing on are the KitchenAid Architect II series (models KGSS807SSS and KGSS907SSS) and the GE Profile or Cafe series (models CGS980SEMSS and PGB910SS, which I believe are functionally about equivalent). I love the look of the KA and I can get a very good price on it, but I'm concerned about a few of the reviews I've seen regarding the noise of the convection fan, as well as some cleaning/heating issues (though maybe some of those were only problems on the Architect I series?). I'm also a bit concerned about the rep of KA's customer service. Meanwhile, the GE has been long revered (including Consumer Reports top rating last year, I believe), and though I've seen only good customer feedback, many on this board repeatedly claim that GE has really fallen off.

So, what direction should I go? Is the KA really too flawed to measure up to the GE? How loud is it? And if GE has fallen, what are the problems you've had? Or, are there other brands in my price range I should consider?

Thanks!

Just for your info. The GE cafe only came out this past fall so the Profile is the one rated in CR. Have you done a search on this site for the models you are interested in?

I have searched this site for the models I'm interested in, but haven't seen a comparison of the two. There was a long thread about the Cafe (here) that was very positive, which I assume applies to the Profile as well. For the KA, I see a couple of threads like this one which seem negative, yet there are no comments from actual owners. It's also been hard to tell who is referring to the Architect I vs Architect II. Hence my post.

    Thanks for any info!

I do not own any of these but from reading posts when we were looking for a range I will say the Profile was/is highly thought of. The cafe is new, some have had issues even with up to three ranges delivered. I was worried about buying such a new item. I am not sure where the Profile is made but I know the Cafe is made in Mexico.
As for the KA I know in the past some posters have had issues with service.
I have read some very happy owners of Frigidaire gas range as well as some of the Kenmore in similiar price range if not less.

We have the KA 807 model. It's been in for 5 months or so and to date has performed great. I vacillated a bit on buying it but we bought the KA version of the Velos M/W plus a KA fridge so it was a good cosmetic match for us. We have not used the self-clean yet. We purhased a 5 year warranty for $60 addl. though.

Not your models, but I had an early architect for which KA refunded me the purchase price and I currently have a ge profile. I'm critical by nature, so take that into account when reading the following.

GE's grate design isn't the best or even second best. Where the tines open up between burners, small pots can drop through (the continous grates thing is lost on them). You can see the same sort of mistake on the Cafe. Their burner head design is awful. It actually takes LONGER to boil water on the 17k burner than the 12k because the diameter of the burner is so big it can't be used efficently for most pots. Conversely, the simmer burner runs too hot!

KA's burners and grates are a better design and deliver more practical heat. However, the refund was because the burners kept melting the porcelain coating off the grates!

Both the profile and ka have fairly low power, low efficency broilers. More expensive KA's have better broiling systems.

The self-clean works well on both.

My profile is two years old. The oven enamel has chipped off in places (naked and rusting are spots the size of quarters) where the racks go. I do not move the racks often. The bottom of the oven has other wierd defects including a 10" circle you can feel.

After using both mfgr burners, I think you'd be best off with models that offered dual or triple ring burners. The cafe has at least one and a more powerful broiler. I would hesitate on the cafe because the ones I have seen in person look... well, they have fit and finish issues.

Have you checked out the electrolux? It has much the same feature set as the cafe and just under $2k.

Here I am a year later with the same question on this year's models... which unit to buy? The GE Cafe or the KA 907? Looking for AG in SS color.

    Any updates on this comparision?

I can buy the KA Architect II for about $400 to $600 less than the Cafe.
