Whew! Glad everything turned out okay! I'm sure you're right, probably a bunch of kids. Especially this time of year when school just got out and they're bored and looking for trouble.

I had uninvited guests at an infill house I was building. A neighbour noticed, yelled at them and they fled. (My son ended up with a nice pendant one of the intruders dropped.)

The incident will spread the word it's not a party house!

Got any idea what they were looking for??? Especially on the roof??? Copper thieves have been rampant around here but there is little to be found on a roof (that's easy to get).

Hi all! We were down at the site this evening and I checked again and nothing seems to be out of place, thank goodness. I was chatting with some of the neighbors and the general consensus was that it was kids. Apparently another neighbor was out of town and the babysitter in charge of her kids had some friends over etc. etc. It was funny when I spoke again with my gc about it this evening, he thought it might have been the roofers. I just laughed out loud at that thought! Roofers around midnight, hmmmmm. I guess I will need to give a bit more attention to the roof if that's the case. I'm under the impression that they probably need more light than a flashlight for their job.

Anyway, probably kids on a dare...brings back memories of my youth!

worthy, seriously doubt it and would be afraid to eat anything they gave us. HA!

Wonder if some people ever think at all? Those "neighbors" who would not report problems with vandals/trespassers are themselves vulnerable to such and discouraging that activity is, to some extent, protecting oneself.

Worthy,friendly, neighborly gestures of food gift baskets is a regional issue.What might be home made marmalade and hot bread in your region would be bagels in the u.s east,fruits anfd nuts in the west, and down south-bisquits and gravy or beer of your choice!

How about a "get to know the neighbors" party? I can throw out a pretty good spread when I want to, they have all been so great about the construction mess and noise.

brutuses, so sorry to hear that! We have lived many places, and we have for the most part been extremely blessed with wonderful neighbors. There have, however, been a couple that were unkind and downright rude, and it really does effect your everyday life. I'm sorry that you are heading into that situation, and hope you can find a way to block it out. And no, I wouldn't accept any baked goods from them, and would caution the kids to stay away on Halloween!!:-)

Actually, the last food gifts neighbours have proffered were homemade wine that tasted like battery acid and some porcine treats that violate my (nominal) religion's practices. Most appreciated was one neighbour who threw a party during which I met a very hot young Trinidadian with all the right moves in all the right places. (I was single then...ahh.)

One blessing about our new neighbor and we pray for is that they do move,as his wife indicated they would next year!! We'll keep our fingers crossed. If you haven't seen my other posts about these neghbors, the reason they don't like us is that our property was used by them for years as their private park and playground. They thought no one would ever buy it because it stayed vacant for so many years. We came along and changed all that and they take that personal which is very silly. The one good thing is our everyday entrance on one side of the house is on the far side away from them so the only time we will have to even look at them is if they happen to be coming or going at the very same time we are. Other than that, the back yard fence will block their view to my yard. Our house is raised so they can't look into my windows either. They have no windows on their side of the house that faces ours which I find weird. Oh well, we're grateful for small miracles. They have a very narrow single drive and no garage so when we put up our fence and take occupancy they won't be able to use our back yard to store the kids rocking horse, etc. and won't be able to park on our grass like they do now. He also likes to walk across my back yard (very cheaky) to take a short cut to the time saver up the road!! We will definitely cramp their style. I guess that's why they decided they'd be moving. Yeppie!!

We, too, have been blessed with some great neighbors. It looks to be the same at our new build location. When we've had a couple new neighbors move in our current neighborhood and I knew they were new to the area, I printed them out a sheet with various and sundry info about the area and included it with some homemade chocolate chip cookies.

My favorite story of one of our neighbors was of a dear old man and his wife who live across the street from us. The wife was born in the house if that gives you any indication of how long they've been in the area! Anyways, he'd come over now and again to chit chat about whatever and b/c of his failing eyesight would have me help him with his flower bulb order for the Spring. During one of his visits he says to me - now remember this man is in his upper 80's - "I really do appreciate you allowing me to come over and chat with you and listen to my stories. But I do hope that your husband doesn't think I'm hitting or flirting with you b/c I really am not" That comment had me giggling for days :) :)
Good neighbors really are a great commodity! Bad ones just make your life miserable.

Yes, I remember now brutuses. I have a similar issue for similar reasons. The neighbors on one side are delightful and the others won't even acknowledge our presence. Their loss but we will report trouble regardless of whose house we suspect it at. Not only b/c it helps protect us but also b/c it is the right thing to do.

Onlygirlsmom, that is such a sweet story! 10 years ago we lived in such a great house, in a fantastic, family oriented neighborhood near Cleveland. All of the lots were 50 by 100 feet deep, everyone took care of their yards and planted flowers, stood around in the evenings and talked while the kids played (this was before we had children) I think back so fondly about all of our neighbors, especially an elderly man that lived behind us. He grew the most beautiful roses, and plenty of them. He regularly brought me a perfect rose for my bud vase, and nothing made me smile like seeing him come across the back yard holding that flower! I think of he and his wife fondly to this day.

Great neighbors are worth their weight in gold.

Reminds me of what happened in the neighborhood we used to live in many moons ago.

At about 3 a.m. our large (and I do mean LARGE) dog who normally never barked much started carrying on and woke all of us up. We turned on all the lights and went from room to room but could find nothing that would have caused him to bark. Of course, he settled down almost immediately after we turned on the lights.

Next day across street neighbor came over and asked us if we had heard or seen anything strange in the neighborhood. We told her no, but did mention about Brutus and his carrying on. Her response was "That's it! That's what did it." I was totally confused till she explained that someone had tried to break in their house by breaking a window on the side. He had apparently heard the sound and once we started turning on all the lights, they fled.

Later that day she came over with a "gift" for Brutus. One of the largest porter house steaks I've ever seen. I figured I could cook it and give him a bit of it. No way! She sat there and fed him the whole thing! I still laugh about that and that was years ago.

My Brutus is jealous!! Porter House Steak. He said he'd have to kill someone for that size treat. HA!
