This is to be hung vertically between the sinks? If so, I agree, sounds dramatic- but it's close to the same height as your med. cabs., right?

At the core, it's a preference issue....if everyday you walk in the bathroom and think "what's up with that rediculous mirror" then it's bad design. period. What size mirror seems right to you?

Maybe she's trying to unload a mirror that didn't work for another job? Kidding.

Melindy, for what it's worth, I'm about to put in a mirror almost the same size over our new vanity. The height doesn't seem excessive to me; as a 6' tall guy, I want the top of our mirrors to reach at least 6' tall. If your vanity is 34" tall, your top is 1", and you have a 4" backsplash, then a 36" tall mirror tops out at 75" -- just about right, in my opinion. As for width, the one we're doing that's going to be 49.5" wide is between two cabinets sitting on the countertop, and we decided to fill the space with mirror rather than having a skinny mirror and two smallish strips of wall between the mirror and the cabinets on both sides.

We decided to build a mirror surround with the granite we used for the countertop, to give it a nice finished look. Here's a quick pic I just took of the in-progress wall after the granite surround was installed yesterday -- with the mirror, sconces on the cabinet sides, lights in the top "bridge" shelf, cabinet drawer pulls and the faucet yet to come:

But as kitch_n_kat says, if you will look at a mirror that size and not like it, then send your designer back to the drawing board to come up with something you'll like better. (For instance, in our bathroom conventional wisdom says we should have installed double sinks, but my wife and I don't like double sinks and prefer to have more counter space, so we did what we liked.)

Thanks you two! Eric, your vanity and cabs are lovely and your mirror is perfect! In my bath it would be vertical so 48" high and 36" wide. It would be flanked by 2 med cabs 45" high.

A friend who used to be in the biz came over and looked at my set up. She suggested a plan very similar to yours with the cabs going to the ceiling.

Here's a pic of the mock up I did. Had to take it thru the window, and couldn't get the screen off! Under the light fixture there is a small silver hook from the current mirror - that's where the top of my heads hits.

The other is the elevation from the designer. I'm not opposed to asking for it to be redone, but at some point I feel like the $ could be going towards buying materials. And it looks good on paper, just feels odd in the space.

Seeing it was very helpful- didn't have it configured right in my head....I don't have a problem with the scale at all- like the layout very much actually, and the size is not unusual.

Thanks Kitch-n-kat. Come to think of it, I have a mirror approx. that size that's been in storage (no designer left overs for me ;) I'll check it out.
I just wish there was a better reflection for all that mirror. And that includes me!

Since you have one large sink and no mirror over the sink with medicine cabinets on either side, it would be nice to have a mirror in the middle. When you wash your face or clean off make-up over the sink, its nice to look into a mirror. Having said that, is your medicine cabinet completely recessed? It may look awkward of you have cabinets jutting out and a mirror in between. I have seen that but in traditional baths - not sure what your aesthetic is. Given your layout, it looks like there is a big gap between both medicine cabinets. I have two recessed medicine cabinets with no mirror in between, but I don't have a large space between both cabinets and there is a sink below each cabinet.

FYI, I used tall medicine cabinets and even though I dropped the ceiling and raised shower floor in my bath, the tall cabinets make my bath seem taller. I am glad I used them even though my hand does not reach the higher shelves.

The design calls for the huge mirror in the middle, and 2 surface mounted med cabs on each side. I agree that there does need to be a mirror in the middle, but not sure the current design of that wall is it. I don't feel like my ceilings are low, but the designer does, and that's why she likes that mirror. Decisions, decisions!

All of our bathrooms have large framed mirrors. They are trimmed in the same Douglas fir that is used throughout the house. I love how much light they reflect and that they function as almost full-length mirrors from a distance. The one in the master reflects the view from the bedroom window, which happens to be of San Francisco and the GG Bridge. Our master bath is tiny but the mirror really helps enlarge the space.
