Yes, my 30" RNB runs very hot at the door when I am at high temps (500deg). I was concerned at first about the kids (6, 2, baby at the time I bought it), but with a little training and a keen eye, we haven't had any issues. It would be the same thing as having a gas fireplace on in the winter. Teach them 'Hot' and they will do ok.

I did, however, get a new door put on yesterday because it was sticking shut. Tonight is pizza night (500 deg) so we will see if there has been any improvements in the last two years.

Saying "hot" for a door that is at their height, and shouldnt be hot is unacceptable. I had my door replaced but they said they would hand pick it since some doors had an inferior piece of "inside" glass. The outside glass is not as critical. The inside glass should be much more heat resistant and the air gap between the tow should be sufficient to keep it warm but not too hot to touch. No more problems.

Hi ms01634, your post really caught my attention. Are you saying Blue Star acknowledged having inferior glass on some doors and that they sent you a new door that fixed the problem? How long ago was this? Your information is really pertinent -- it would be great to know that you can get this fixed if you contact Blue Star.

You bring up an excellent topic. I have actually decided going against buying a Bluestar over this past week with a large contributing factor to the heat issue. I was up at Eurostoves looking at a Capital and while there took the tour of the other stoves they offer and the Bluestar was hands down, the hottest (and not in a good way) stove there. The door sides and kick plate were obscenely hot. I have a 3 and 1.5-year old and this is certainly a huge concern and a deciding factor for me and my children.

Question to the crowd, what do you consider an acceptable radiant temperature of a stove?

My recollection is that the max acceptable temperature for UL listing is 180F. That's hot enough to be able to touch and know it's hot and pull back without a burn. If you touch and hold for more than a "Mississippi," it will burn you.

I had a thermal camera a while back and neglected to run the oven and see how hot it was outside.

My daughter was 15 mo.s when we moved back in after remodeling and adding the BS range. That was 4 years ago and warning her has been enough.

On a side note, I ran across this link the other day. Eurostoves went and took some time and got real world temp readings of a BlueStar. From my, "back of finger," thermometer...those numbers sound/feel about right!

hello, i have also recently posted regarding the exterior heat issue with my bluestar range. we are extremely concerned so much so that we have halted the completion of our kitchen renovation and have not used our oven. have not heard back from bluestar regarding this problem. the range is much too hot for my children, pets and cabinetry. we have been endlessly searching for a resolution. any suggestions would help. thank you.

Please let me know what blue star had to say about that. We avoid using the oven for that very reason. If we do need to use it we do it at nap or use baby gates to keep the little fingers out of the kitchen. It's disappointing to say the last.

They got back with me and had no issue sending someone out to check it out (which is all I wanted - just to be sure it wasn't malfunctioning). But basically there's nothing wrong with it, they just vent out of the front just below the door which the appliance expert said was "strange" but there's not really anything to do about it. Crummy, but better just to keep them away. I guess in a few years we can all enjoy our ovens more fully!

Our 12 month old just got a second degree burn (huge blisters all over the back and front) on her little hand from touching the outside of our 36" Blue Star. I was standing right there! It should NOT get this hot on the outside. I will be contacting Blue Star.
