Hi Mary, and thank you for your POLITE inquiry! I had to laugh at the irony of this. I never heard back from the original person. And I don't mean to sound like an old maid school marm, but as designers we work too hard just to give out information on demand. So thank you and lecture is now over.

As for your question, this house is 100 years old and all the walls are plaster. So this room was skim coated above the chair rail (that means that a thin layer of plaster was skimmed over the old plaster to smooth it out.) Then right over the plaster (no primer, no paint), two coats of Benjamin Moore's metallic glaze was CAREFULLY rolled on. The color used here is Champagne Dreams, but if you look at their color chart, they have a bunch of wonderful shades.

Now don't worry. You could get the same effect on carefully finished sheetrock. The important thing is for the walls to be as smooth as possible. Ideally, the sheetrock would be skim coated, but even that's not necessary with a good paint job. Just keep the under coat flat. And be as careful as possible with painting out the glaze. It's water based, so it's not as forgiving as oil. You will invariably get streaks, but that can even enhance the overall look, which resembles silk wallpaper.

You can also experiment with color. In this case the base color was a soft white (such as Dove White) and the glaze was a soft gold (in this case, Champagne Dreams.) But try other colors for the base and other metallics for the glaze (Veil Cream, a soft platinum, is also very pretty.) The end result will be luminous!

This is not just a coat of paint. It's a very interesting application; easy to do and gorgeous in person. I'd be happy to share all the details, but I gotta tell you that first you have to ask politely. A simple please or thank you will do. I know people are busy and just don't think to do this, but it does make a difference.

Oh, Elizabeth, you are voicing for a lot of us! My fear is we are losing the battle, however, as the posts get frequently more demanding, impatient, and thoughtless! I see sarcastic posts added by anonymous users, hiding behind their anonymity, and in some cases giving naive homeowners dangerous advice! I hope the active Houzz community steps up, as I have seen in the past, and helps keep these Discussions friendly, helpful, and sincere!

That's really sad to hear. Houzz is such a great resource, especially for homeowners. My new policy is that if someone asks a demanding question (no please, no thank you, no complimentary comment) I just ignore it. I won't even take the time anymore to try to cajole them into a polite question. Just not worth it.

But I have also had many lovely comments -- really nice people -- and that's very gratifying. We all know the old saying:

"You get more bees with honey than with vinegar!"

Kindness and being courteous unfortunately is not something that seems to be taught these days. Sad but its never too late to learn and by saying what you said Elizabeth to the earlier poster may help them with future posts.

Now returning to your technique. Wow!! I saw the metallic paint at my local
BM store and was wondering how people used it. I will definitely have to do a trial
