Duane Collie - Question, Please!

Our H & M Kodiak sofa, love seat, chair & ottoman in Saddle are scheduled to be delivered on Friday from our local dealer! Yeah! Thank you, first of all, for all of the valuable information that you provide which led us to this purchase! I am so excited! This is our first den furniture to be purchased since we married (11 years ago- ack!). Now for the question. I thought I had read in a previous post of a place on the sofa where you could cut/remove a bit of the leather that was excess to be able to take to the stores for matching pillows/accessories. Is this true? If so, where on the furniture would I find this? Underneath, I'm sure. I do not intend on cutting up a $4,000 sofa just to match pillows. I'll buy, bring home, and return if necessary. But if I can get a sample swatch from the sofa without harming it, that would be great! After reading so much, talking to so many sales people, and looking at various manufacturers, some of it became a blur. I may be totally off the wall, but it seems like someone, somewhere mentioned it. Thank you!

That's correct, Cindy..and hope you enjoy your new purchase. There will be a 'flag' under the center cushion of the sofa, and in the middle of the loveseat. Basically its a loose flap of leather for your to use as you see fit. Most the time we use these flags to match a hide if buying a companion piece at a later time. There is so much variance in dye lots in leather that long ago the quality manufacturers started doing this.

Also, if you get severe sun fade on your leather over time, you can clip that flag and send it to LeatherMaster products (a division of Stain-Safe) and for $ 90.00 or so they will make you a custom re-dye kit you can easily apply yourself to restore the color.

I'd recommend you leave at least one of the flags attached to the pieces for long term need down the road. With four pieces inbound, you should have plenty of flags to take one for pillows, etc.

Great! So do I just trim it off with scissors? Also, how will I clean/maintain my new leather furniture? What products/brands do you recommend? Thank you again for your help!

Exactly, just cut what you need from any of the flags. Hancock and Moore recommends ONLY mild soap and water for any of their hides. Anything more than that and you're on your own. I've found that soap and water by itself does not put any luster in the leather and myself I use Leathermaster kits on my pieces at home. Before you use anything other than what the maker recommends, test an area thats not obvious and check the area a few weeks later. Certain leather products and certain hides are incompatible and flaking of the leather topcoat can result. It's very rare, but it can happen.

Our friends have a beautiful leather sofa that was in a bottom floor room of their vacation home. When they arrived for a visit it was covered in mildew and they think the only way to get rid of it is replace it. Any suggestions?? In the mean time they have fixed the humidity problem. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have two H&M sofas. Although I like them, I am not happy with the color (too light). I was intrigued by the Leather Master re-dye kit mentioned above. Can you order that to re-dye the entire sofa? Is that something that can be done, or is that best left to the professionals?

In my opinion I would call in a leather tech to do this job. I have seen sofas that have been re-dyed and they do come out quite well and as a rule it is not that costly of a job. We had a sofa re-dyed and I think we were charged about $400.
