You make it sound like a lay-away plan . Is this a joke ?

I don't understand the deduction plan either, lol.

It might be kind of nice to be able to target a percentage of our tax deductions towards govt spending or programs that we would like to see funded.

"I thought (since those Cal folks are always on the cutting edge) of how it would be if pot purchases were a payroll deduction."

I am not understanding how pot purchases or any other things a person chooses to purchase can be a 'payroll deduction'.

Payroll deductions are things like tax withholding, garnishments, child support payments, medical insurance, union dues, and in some cases charitable donations. Deductions are pre-tax and in most cases are not taxed at all and the receiver of the funds pay the tax.

How would *pot* be a deduction? How would pot be "a more meaning full deduction" as you say in your post?? If it was a deduction, then it would be a pre-tax deduction right? How would this help balance the budget then????

Please explain more. I am not understanding this.

I wonder if OP means direct deposits rather than payroll deductions?

DH's employer will divide his paycheck between as many as 5 different accounts when they do the direct deposit. Just tell them how much (or what percentage) goes where. It's rather nice, because we don't see the money that goes into the emergency fund or the regular savings account, and so we don't think about spending it.

However, some of DH's payroll deductions come out AFTER taxes are taken out and are just done for the employee's convenience, like the payments on the small loan we took from DH's 401k account. If we bought our home, car and life insurance from them (he works for an insurance company but their premiums are STEEP even with the employee discount) they would deduct it from his paycheck after taxes.

jm, neat to be able to redirect monies in different accounts, at the source.
