Hand-Scraped vs. Flat

What's the deal with the hand-scraped floors? It seems that they showed up all of a sudden and every grain I think is interesting only comes that way. I'm told that this stuff can't be sanded--at least, if it is damaged it can only be sanded flat. I'd like to know if this is as durable as "normal" wood flooring options or is this something that is more convenient for the manufacturer because they get to replace your floor more often. I'd like to hear from someone who sands and refinishes floors--do they think it is a good option? Is this something that appeals to home builders and people who "flip" properties because they don't have to deal with he wear issues? The only people who have said anything about it have been salesmen so naturally, I have my concerns.
