Another WWYD?

Actually this is kind of funny and I tried my best but it still didn't work.

Yesterday we had people over, and 14 stayed for the meal. My SIL (dh's brother's wife, also my BFF) was here.

There were two desserts. A Dump Cake which I made, and a bakery cake which I ordered.

The Dump Cake is always a hit. SIL & I were in the kitchen when everyone was outside before the meal was served. Dump Cake is also my DIL's favorite cake, and since she wasn't there I put some aside for my son to take to her.

My SIL said, "Oh, I want to take some home too!" Now this was before dinner was served!

I got a small container out and then I said to her, "Since we have to save some for everyone, don't eat any of this cake until everyone has had a chance to get some, because then there wouldn't be enough to go around.

I caught her eating a large serving before the rest were even ready for dessert!

Since I love this woman dearly I didn't say anything and just kind of rolled my eye's behind her back. lol.

The cake was gone immediately and I know not everyone was able to get some of it.

Would you have said anything when you caught her with another serving?

In the whole scheme of things, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, floods, famines, global warming and disease. Does it really matter that your SIL ate the cake?

    .....Jane

Oh come on Dawn, don't start adding the "things could be worse" scenario. Other's have been doing this similar topic. I do hope you came into their topic and told them to blow it off.

Oak, I'm really fond of you and have read your comments for the last two or three years and enjoyed them. At the risk of getting slammed over here, I stand by my original comment. It's just cake and your SIL got her finger caught in the cake plate. She loves your cake is all.

    .....Jane

Well she was awfully rude! You told her not to touch it & she did it anyway. I guess since she's your BFF she thought it was OK? I hope you didn't give her any to take home. BTW, what is a dump cake? Can you post the recipe?

I would have said something, in a light way. "Oh thanks! Now somebody won't get dessert!" Then I would offer her the recipe. "I see that you really like this cake. Here is the recipe so you can have as much of it as you would like."

It is just cake, but since you specifically asked that the cake be shared with all the guests it was just rude on her part.

You've posted before about your SIL. I remember the funeral issue, or when she was taking items, etc. You should probably know her behavior by now and expected her actions (at least that's how she's coming across to me).

I agree, it really wasn't a big deal in the big picture. It sounds like this is typical behavior for her. At least there was another dessert and everyond could have something.

    tina

Gracie, recipe below this reply. Yes, I did give her some to take home before I served it, that's when I told her not to get anymore until everyone had a chance to have some.

Tina, I am aware of her behavior, but I wasn't expecting that, especially since I specifically said not to get any until everyone had a chance to eat the cake.

My SIL is such a sweetheart though, and because of that I put up with a lot from her. :)

Jane, I do understand what you're saying, but you can use the same analogy in all topics, not just this one. In the grand scheme of things, everything we write is meaningless, even on the decor board.

If there's starving children in Africa, who gives a flip about paint color or cake? I was just wondering why you chose my topic to say this in when you didn't say anything in the other WWYD topics. I felt singled out by you, and it hurt my feelings.

I thought my topic was kind of funny.

In 9x13 pan, dump/layer the following items in order given. Suggestions below.

1 small can Crushed Pineapple, drained
Spoon on 1 can Cherry or Apple Pie Filling
Spread 1 box Yellow Cake Mix (dry)
Slice two Sticks of Butter, lay on top
Sprinkle on 1 cup Nuts (to taste)
Sprinkle coconut on top (optional, or to taste)

Bake uncovered in pre-heated oven for 1 1/2 hours at 325.

Tips: I double the pie filling & pineapple and I think you can use peach, blueberries, anything you like.

If you double the fruits, make sure your pan is a tad bit larger than a 9x13 so it won't boil over while cooking.

This is like one of those crumb pies. Once you cover it for overnight, it tends to get moist, but it's still good.

The coconut will turn black in some areas while baking, but I always scrape it off after cooking.

There's an entertainment factor in this conversations section, I vote for pure abandon , be it posting pictures of purses, or deep soul searching questions,
it's a diversion from all other disturbing things happening around us in the world.

yikes Oakley, she really loves that cake, lol...... childish really to sneek a piece after what you told her.

I had something similar happen at a post-wedding family get-together. A guy from the other side of the family started tucking into a cake before anything had been served. I couldn't believe it. He literally was standing there in the kitchen eating it slice by slice, with his fingers no less. I walked over, gave him the evil eye and said "that cake is meant to serve everyone and it's the only cake we have." He sheepishly walked away. I don't think he was deliberately being rude, he was just stupid.

And I agree with Mitchdesj. It's nice to be able to come here to talk and vent about life's little vicissitudes.

I agree with mitch too. It seems like this forum is mostly for fun, also for helping each other with everything from housekeeping tips to family problems, illness, and grieving.

And I can't wait to try your recipe, oakley- sounds delicious.

I was wondering if this was the same SIL with sticky fingers, grabbing everything she could before the body was even cold. I guess you shouldn't be surprised by anything she does.

I really don't think that Jane was trying to be hurtful. She has demonstrated herself to be a thoughtful, kind person in these forums so I have to think she was just trying to help alleviate Oakley's annoyance with her SIL. Sometimes what we mean and what we write (and how it's received) are totally at odds. I should know. ;-D

Oakley, your SIL sounds like someone with diminished social skills. She probably doesn't intend to be a horse's arse, but is likely just ignorant. I guess just plain stupid is better than a stupid/mean combination!

Oak, honey,I would never hurt you deliberately, and if I did, I do apologize. Your one of the sweetest people on here and I am one of many that have copied your yummy recipes down.

About twenty years when I moved down here to Alabama I had a family reunion and served mexican food. Oh boy, I decorated my courtyard up in a mexican decor. Rented round tables and chairs, a million white lights were in the bushes, an open bar. People were coming from Michigan, California, Tennessee and Georgia.

My sister's and I were cutting up peppers and onions and making guacamole dip faster than you could shake a stick at.

Then my country cousin arrives early and takes a seat out in the courtyard. When my sister's and I finished up we hurried and got ready.

We walk out the french doors to the courtyard to see our beautiful courtyard. And my country cousin had eaten all the guacamole dip on every table. Both of my sister's looked at me with their hands over their mouth with a gasp.

My country cousin says in a voice that takes me back to Deliverance circa 1973....I just love this green stuff, what is it?

We all busted out laughing because of the VOICE and the fact that we were already tired and the three or four margarita's we had while working and dancing didn't hurt. (lol)

But, it may of been a different story if I had done the party all by myself with a clear mind. So, I get how you felt.

I am copying your Dump Cake recipe down. I told my sister about this and she said write it down and email it to me too.

Your SIL sounds like a treat. ;) Very childish. I don't know what I would've said or done because I'm not always good at reacting when I'm shocked. LOL Sounds like you need to make 2 cakes from now on. (joking)

Newdawn - "And my country cousin had eaten all the guacamole dip on every table."
Geez! Had she been drinking? Maybe that and the fact that the dip was great caused her to forget manners? :)

Maybe Oak could make her SIL a "special cake of her very own" for the next get-together. **insert evil grin here**

Here is a link that might be useful: Oh, YUM!

This recipe brings back memories. My oldest son made this for Mother's Day when he was in first grade. The teacher wrote this cute poem about his needing a little help in the kitchen and that if I would help him he would present me with this dessert. She called it the "Dump,Dump, Sprinkle, Pat." It is so easy that a child can do it and it is very tasty! Thanks for the memory!

OMG that kitty litter cake is....well fascinating yet utterly disgusting looking. The thoughts of actually eating it makes me want to throw up. However, I have an oinery streak in me. I may have to just make it for my kids. The looks on their faces would be priceless. It would make a great April Fool's Day gag.

Jane, all's fine with us. Sometimes I get a bit defensive. :)

Love the story about the guacomole! Are you sure it wasn't my SIL in disguise? lol

My SIL is greedy, I'll give you that. I think it's because she's gone without for so long she's totally out of the loop where manners come into play.

It's not that she's poor, she just feels entitled to take things! I think she's naive and has no idea how her actions effect other's.

Yes, she's the one who immediately started laying claim to my deceased MIL's things, but thankfully my DH was the Executor and he tactfully put her in her place. :)

She did write down the recipe though!

I have a friend like you SIL. I used to be embarrassed and put out by that behavior, but now I just roll with it. When I entertain and I know that I'll be serving something really popular, I double it since inevitably people will want to take some home or have 2nds.

Not sure how to react to your SIL, especially since you made a specific statement, but I guess just be prepared for the next time.

Aunt Jen that is too gross and funny! I wonder how many guests will be sticking their fingers in before others are served?? Not me!

    Newdawn, that is hilarious.........

Pesky, the only time I've taken food home when eating a big holiday dinner with family is after dinner is over and I see that there's plenty left for the host and hostess to enjoy once all company has gone home. It's customary in our family to take home leftovers, providing there's plenty of the specific food left.

But to ask for "leftovers" before the dish is served? That's pretty tacky.

I honestly think she didn't know how tacky she was behaving. Just like how she behaved when my MIL's body was still laying on the bathroom floor before the Coroner took her out! lol

Not a problem Oak, I am very sensitive.

Sounds like next family gathering you'd better make two dump cakes. (I can hardly wait to try it myself!)

I can't think of anybody in my extended family who wouldn't have said something immediately, along the lines of "Uh oh, now somebody isn't going to get their share. That's why I asked you to only have one piece." No anger or tears, just matter of fact.

Your SIL shouldn't get away with breaking little social rules just because she's a sweetie. She needs to be taught or else others will think she's taking advantage of them.

Newdawn, I like your answer! Glad you & Oak cleared the air.

Seriously, though Newdawn...you were spot on. We ALL have our "cake" scenarios! That doesn't mean, as Mitch & others have said, that we are silly for being effected by them, wondering about them, or asking others wwyd. As part of that exploration, it's very useful to be reminded, sometimes daily, that "it's just cake!"

Now, about that cake...Oakley it must be delicious! I'd love it if someone enjoyed something I made so much that they sneaked a serving.

Still, I know where you are coming from. You were trying to be a thoughtful hostess and make sure everyone had their fair share of the goodies. Feeling a little annoyed & disappointed is understandable.

I would make two dump cakes at the next event. If it's THAT big a hit, I'd make sure that there was plenty for everyone who wanted (even those who might want seconds, or to have a larger serving, or whatever) and to send home with those who wanted to take some home etc. Especially for something that (apparently) easy to make... I'd feel more comfortable having extra than telling someone that they had to limit their portion, but that's just me.

Jane, I'm sensitive too, we'd be great friends! lol

Stinky, the main reason I was disappointed wasn't because all the guests didn't have some, but that my DH didn't get to eat any at all. He was letting other's get their servings first, so he missed out on his favorite cake.

Next year I'll be making two of the cakes! I want to try it with peach pie filling, if there is such a thing.

Now that we're on the subject, do you all have any "funny" family members like my SIL? I'd love to hear stories!

While I was cleaning the kitchen just now, it dawned (good pun!) on me that my SIL reminds me of Suzanne Sugarbaker!

Can't you just see Suzanne eating a piece of cake after being told not to? lol

Not only that, my SIL has to be in full makeup if she leaves the house, even to go get a loaf of bread!

She and I had our own little slumber party Wed. night and she sat on the bed with my makeup case going through all of it. Yup, I have a Suzanne on my hands.

Infuriating and you just can't help but love her.

I know I need to loosen up, but I have a hard time liking people who are thoughtless and greedy. I probably wouldn't want to do anything with them ever again except when family gatherings demanded it...and yes, I would at some quiet point, discuss it with them.

I had art camp again today and at the big end party/take your art home/meet the parents event, I ended up manning the food table and serving the sheet cake. One boy, after not letting him have a second piece ( we barely had enough, first time I've ever seen one of those giant store sheet cakes get eaten ;-) swiped his finger all along one side to get a fingerful of icing. Messing up at least six pieces.
He did this right in front of me! Well, I very nicely told him why that was wrong, thoughtless and just plan rude of him to do that and he should never ever do that again. I was kinda shocked but I don't think he cared at all what I said.
He then went on to take about two cups of cheeze its...

I don't understand those people whatever the age.

Newdawn - LMAO picturing your "country cousin!"

Bumble, in your case I have to wonder if the boy was simply starved to death, and he ran his finger through the frosting out of spite/jealousy because other's are eating better than he is at home.

    Do you know hinm?

Ever been to Costco when they do their samples? We avoid it like the plague...I've NEVER seen such rude people. We joke, don't get between the shoppers and the sample lady, or you're likely to get beat up! Seriously, these people act like animals when it comes to free samples of grape jelly! Gods forbid if they're sampling cheese cake...you can't get down the aisle.

And I know for a fact that those people are not in any way starving.

I've never understood how some people are when it comes to 'free' food. At potlucks, buffets, or samples, people get so weird about it.

Oakley, that's very charitable of you...I sincerely doubt that hunger prompted the obnoxious little devil to attack the frosting! He's lucky BB was in charge & not Stinky. Don't think I'd have responded nearly so nicely!

    Pesky, LOL!

"Seriously, these people act like animals when it comes to free samples of grape jelly! Gods forbid if they're sampling cheese cake..."

One of the funniest observations I've read here...ever! So true!

Oakly, his father is a professor and the whole family were chubby. No, just bad manners.

Oh Stinky, I'm sure you are always nice!

Starvation wasn't to blame..."No, just bad manners." Due to insufficient discipline in the home, no doubt. Resulting in what is commonly known as a "spoiled brat."

Thanks for your kind words, BB, but one of my pet peeves is children allowed to run wild. Thank goodness you called him on his inappropriate actions. Maybe no one else in his life does! Children need & even want limits. When they are over-indulged this sort of behavior results. No telling what else this little fellow will get his hands into next (no pun intended.)

While I don't think I'd be "mean," to a child, I wouldn't hestitate to be a little stern if called for. You did a good job, and balanced your authority with sensitivity.

Thanks for the recipe Oakley -- so easy and sounds fantastic!

If it was me; the cake would have been away to begin with; especially if I knew there may not be enough. I hate being put on the spot like that; probably would have said that once everyone gets a piece; we'll discuss take home. The issue would be her attitude on seeing you cut a piece for DIL. When I saw that there wasn't enough to go around; I would have been a cake nazi; telling her she's already had a piece as well as putting the piece I cut for DIL back & just making another cake the next day to split between myself; DIL & SIL.

I also would have done exactly what roselvr did.
