My friend has a similar granite and cabinet combination and she used a multi color slate tile for the backsplash and it looks great! I love what you have done with your kitchen, it really looks so nice! Congrats! Wish I had some pictures of a slate tile backsplash. She used the 4 x 4's on the diagonal. It's really pretty and it would go with your floor too.

I think slate would look great, too. Have you seen the Jeffrey Court Fire and Ice tile? It has the shape that you want, but doesn't look too contemporary. This link is kind of the same finishes as your kitchen.

Thank you for the suggestions so far. The fireand ice is nice. Is it too dark formy small kitchen? Hoping boxerpups weighs in also.

Slate is good, but definately requires sealing. Tumbled Travertine marble is another good choice.

Beautiful kitchen! Your panels in your upper cabinets give your kitchen a traditional look so I would stay away from anything that looks too modern or too busy. I have AZ Tile Tumbled Camargo (travertine) 2x4 with antique linen grout and light almond outlet covers. The Camargo has some subtle color variations in it and it not as "holey" as other tumbled stone. It has some nice beige tones that would complement your floor and cabinets. At the same time it has some nice gray tones that would complement your granite.
