Galley Kitchen Advice

Hi everyone,

New to the kitchen section of these forums, please be gentle. My wife and I purchased our first home together a couple of years ago, and it came complete with an authentic 1950's galley style kitchen. We now have the funds and familial support to do a modest kitchen reno. I've spent a lot of time haunting these forums, and have read the wonders of 30" deep counter tops.

The problem is, one side of our kitchen only has 28" until it hits a door frame. We are planning on doing our pantry to the immediate side of the door, meaning that it will be 28" deep cabinets or drawers or something of the like. So... our options look like this (keep in mind this is a poorly designed galley style kitchen with approximate 10'3" from wall to wall.

1. 28" deep counters on both sides of the galley.

2. Sticking with 25" deep counters on both sides (the depth we have currently).

3. 28" on one side, 30" on the other.

4. Asking the contractor if we can move the doorway a few inches to allow for 30" counters on both sides.

5. I'm open to anything.

30" counters with 30" deep base drawers and 15" uppers really are a necessity, aren't they? Help me justify this.

I've attached a picture for all of the visual thinkers out there.
