The most important thing will be the notes and documents and photos youve accumulated to date. Some contractors will, in addition to completing the job, audit what was done and document it for you. How to find one? Sorry to say pretty much the same way you find any contractor.

Was there a subcontractor or other provider in the process you liked and who did good work? They may know of another GC .... but of course if they have a strong relationship with your GC that wont work. Even a retailer who you liked?

BTW, you say they demanded money for exceeding "allowances" as though that was some sort of trick? In your original quote, were there allowances for certain categories? WHen you had to make decisions regarding those allowances, didnt you two discuss how those decisions impacted budget?

We've had several issues with our GC and his subcontractors. Since we purchased most materials, we contacted the suppliers and asked for their suggestions and referrals. All were quite helpful...seems like they've been down this road plenty of times.

The stone place where we purchased our travertine provided us with several installers that came out and gave us reports on the quality (or lack thereof) on the installation of our travertine floor.

The company we bought our tile from gave us the name of their favorite independent contractor who is now going to repair and finish our backsplash.

Kitchenaid gave us the names of local certified appliance installers and the one we are using is very knowledgable and has solutions!

And, we are using our own electrician to finish the electrical.
