Air compressor getting old

Hello everyone!

I recently find out on my AC check up inside air compressor the coil is falling apart,contact rusted bad and noisy,pump is really hot,wire AMPs are higher than suposed to be,freon level is right,but on indicator(guage) when AC people connected it pressure was moving up and down durring AC run.They sed it needs to be changed but this unit is 10 years old/11SEER needs to be upgraded to 13SEER.Anyways I need your help,suggestions.I'm in FL where summer is 90-100F and humid my home is about 1900 SF how much should be my replacement costs and what size sould I go with.They told me $2500 but don't know about TON and also told me needs to be upgraded inside coil too onto 13 SEER which is onother 1000 bucks so tell me your sugestions don't understand those letters(SEER;TON;J...)looking for the cheapest possible way. Thank you

Cheapest, as you know, isn't always the best way. Make sure you find a competent contractor for your sake. It sounds like you would be best off with a complete replacement. I would look for a competent contractor who will replace the whole system at an affordable yet reasonable cost and then choose the efficiency that best suits your budget. Mismatching equipment is not a good thing. I can't tell you the price of the job since I can't see it and I don't live in your area. Prices vary market to market, company to company.

Ten years in FL puts a lot of running hours on a unit.
The quality of the total installation, the setup & proper maintenance determines the life of the condensing unit.

You need to learn as much as you can concerning what to look for to get the best results for you.

Saving energy usage ought to be a primary goal.
