Wigs

Have you or do you ever wear a wig, not because of medical issues, but because you just find it more convenient? I'm back in IL visiting my BFF sinceh high school, and she only wear wigs, never 'does' her hair. She's tried talking me into getting one, but when I put one on, it always feels like I'm wearing a hat.

I've worn one of her auburn ones, love the change from blonde, but should I just change the color completely? I 've heard reds fade easily and am also fearful I might not like it after a matter of time, and have also heard it's not easy going back to blonde from red. Thoughts?

If you want to start off slow; try the Hairdo by Ken Paves (Jessica Simpson). The hair quality is decent & will give you length or a different style depending on which one you choose. My daughter has a few that we found on clearance

I have a Raquel Voltage in the same color as my own hair. It's light as a feather and has been a saving grace to me. When I travel, it goes with me so I can avoid wasting time on hair appts. and, on very hot days when my own hair would wilt, I use it. Also, in lieu of hat, I wear it out in the cold winters we have in Ma. Everyone thinks it's my hair, lol. I highly recommend one to anyone who travels. Since I bought mine, two of my sisters and two friends did the same and they enjoy theirs too. When you're having a bad hair day and get a invite to dinner on short notice, plunk it on and you're good to go. Btw, I tried my on in a salon but went to Ebay and bought it for $100.00 less.

I've only worn a wig when I had no hair. Have to say it was very convenient and saved a lot of time not having to do my hair though I'm very happy to have my hair back. I googled that Raquel Voltage and came up with a page with very cute wigs. Hmmmmm...maybe this isn't a bad idea to have available when in a hurry.

In her younger years my great aunt was a model. She began wearing wigs then and wore them into her old age, even in her own home. She felt that that was the best way to be well groomed. She always looked fabulous!

Yayagal, If you wear a wig and still have plenty of hair does the wig sit flat enough to look good? I'd love to wear a wig for those days when I can't be bothered with taking time to do my own hair. Did you feel odd when you started wearing it, like you were in costume? Also, has anyone ever asked if that's your 'real' hair and if so, what did you say?

Patty, due to my mom going through chemo this last year, I have been to MANY wig shops! We went to very nice places where they only sell the best wigs, to the cheapie ones (my mom wanted the cheapie ones because she didn't want to spend the money on something she wasn't going to wear forever) but, my dad told me to get her the best their is, and as many as she wants! All I can say is, you get what you pay for. She bought a cheapie and a very nice one, and she ONLY wore the nice one. She wanted the wig to look much like her own style, which wasn't very thick, and this one was great. It did not look like a wig, and so many people asked where she got her hair cut. She told some people and some people she didn't. Her wig is gray, even though her hair has grown back now, so I don't know if that is why it look so good on her. Most people don't buy gray wigs, so maybe they don't assume it was a wig.

I loved trying on all the wigs though! I thought when I got older and didn't want to do my hair, I wouldn't mind having a wig. Their is a way you pin up your hair (in sections) that makes the wig stay on very secure.

If you ever are looking for a cute hairstyle, browse through wigs.com, etc. Much easier than looking through a hair magazine, imo. LOL

My aunt has worn a wig for YEARS but, hers are too long, and she reminds me of Dolly Parton!

I know absolutely nothing about wigs but I am now fascinated with your conversations. How do you keep it on your head? I am not being nasty, I truly don't know.

I wore a wig ( or 2 or 3 ) while doing chemo. I bought several what some might call cheap wigs....$150 or so....not the really cheap $40 ones nor the real hair $500 ones.
Real hair wigs have to be professionally styled....and shampooed.
My wigs were dynel or some other synthetic. I washed them and shook them out and hung on a shower head to dry.
It was convenient not to have to worry about shampoo or conditioner nor mousse etc. Plop on the wig....always looked "done"....the clue to a good looking wig is the cut and style. With a wig, less is more. So many are just too TOO much hair....a good stylist can do amazing things.
But I am damn glad to have my hair back!

Patti, this wig is so light and the hair is so fine that it looks exactly like my own hair which is blonde and fine but lots of it. Every one tells me they love my hair and when I tell them it's a wig they don't believe it unless I lift it up. The frame of it is open mesh so you can scratch your head, feel the wind in it an even open the car window, I only use 4 bobby pins to hold it secure. Here's a pic below with it on a very vry hot day when I knew my read hair would wilt. Now my husband says "your wig looks good" and it's my real hair or the other way around. lol If you do get one, as a hairdresser, I would only advise to get a Raquel Welch.

Here is a link that might be useful:

yaya, I love that wig! It doesn't look like a wig on you and looks very natural. I see where you say its thinner, which is why I do think it looks more natural. You look great and it doesn't hurt that you are so pretty too!

Here's what I am curious about... Do the wigs look like the photos when you buy them, or do they need styling? Do you style it on your head? Hair products and everything? What if you are incompetent with hair tools, like me?

olliesmom, your dad is a gem!

yayagal, that wig looks so natural. You look great!

yayagal, nope...nope...I do not believe that is a picture of someone who has been married for over 50 years! OMG! And, your husband looks wonderful as well.

I love your wig. I never considered one; however, after seeing yours...hmmmm....I just might give it a try. I have shoulder length EXTREMELY frizzy hair that loses its length by 5" when dry! I have to keep it long as I need to be able to wear it back most of the time. A wig would be a fabulous solution for a shorter look!

Again, you and your husband are a beautiful couple...but...married over 50 years? Nah...... :-)

nigel-thanks! And, the wig experience I have had, is they come like they are. If they are styled curly, spikey or straight, that is how they stay. You just wash and let it dry natural-on a plastic-like head where it gets air underneath also.

I'm sure others will have more to add.

The best thing to do is go to wig shops and try them on, and the ladies there have tons of advice.

I got a Marilyn Monroe type wig last year (to dress up like Dolly Parton in 9 to 5, and wore the same on for Mimi as in Drew Carey) for Halloween at a wig shop, instead of buying the cheapies at the Halloween stores, and took advantage of trying on some real life wigs, it was fun.

I really liked the wigs with the roots that were a little dark on the blonde wigs, looked so natural! I kept thinking when I get older, I wouldn't mind throwing a wig on for convenience.

If you go to see Raquel Welch wigs on line they have tons with darker roots which totally makes the difference plus you never see a mass of hair like most wigs but this blows and moves. You get it, shake it and put it on and use 4 bobby pins and you can style it however you want although the style is always there. I was doing a wedding and five hairstylists asked my where I got my hair cut lol. Thanks for all the compliments,(blushing) I'm 73 and he's 79. The picture is a year old.

Yayagal, Your wig looks fabulous and so do you. What is the name of that Raquel Wig??

Yayagal, I just saw where you posted the name of the wig. So nevermind. lol

Oh, Yaya, you look just adorable in your wig! I agree with the others, both you and your DH don't look old enough to be celebrating a 50th.

Thanks for sharing this topic with us. I can see your point that it might be good to have a cute wig to plop on when we're in a hurry and/or having a bad hair day, or when traveling, or just for fun and to change our look.

I was also surprised to learn that the synthetics are so easy to upkeep. Do you ever curl yours or otherwise use low heat on it? Or just shampoo, let air dry, then wear?

Pattycakes, I'm sorry, I should have given you credit for this great thread!

Yaya, that wig and you looks great!

I had a bout of super thinning hair (hypothyroidism) and wore wigs for awhile. I had a short blonde wig that looked much like my own hair and I also had a long brunette wig just for fun.

Now that my hair has grown back in, I don't need the wig anymore but occasionally I wear the long brunette wig when I go out to a club or bar with friends. We call it my party hat because I get hit on a bunch when I wear it so it adds to the fun!

    My party hat:

Anyway, I went to a wig salon (where they sell and style) and I would suggest go to one of these places if considering a wig. They have a lot of helpful information on how to wear, style and care for your wig. But most importantly, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. They are used to dealing with women experiencing hair loss for medical reasons and the depression and low self-image these women have. So the salon is a very loving, happy place to be. I saw a bunch of happy tears while there and even shed a few myself.

As far as wig choices go, I agree with Yaya, the Raquel Welch line is very nice and getting one with a very low weight is the first thing to consider because they seem to lay more naturally.

Kelly, I've said this before but what the heck, you are so pretty! I also can't believe you're older than 28!!

Yes, kelly, you do look young! But, I do see you as a blonde though-lol!

Kelly, every time I see that picture of you, I think you are Rachel Ray. Swear you aren't sisters?

Kelly you and your wig are gorgeous if that is the wig lol. I call mine my hair hat as I can go out in the snow or rain and shake it and dry it when I come back and it's all set again.
nigel-bigel, my wig came all styled, it looked just like the picture. I put it on, brushed it the way I'd like it, put some behind my ears and it looked more believable and that was it. I wash it with wig shampoo and put it on an upside down cup to dry and when dry, I brush it and wear it again. Truthfully the water looked clear when I washed it. They don't really get dirty. This weekend I'll be gone for four day and my "hair hat" as I call it will be packed in my bag for the convenience and I'll use it and make my chums wish they had one. The bonus in the winter is I don't have to wear a hat and the hairdo never wilts. Check Raquel Welch wigs on ebay, you save a ton.

Thanks Marlene! That pic was taken about three years ago when I was 40. The wig still looks pretty good too!

Yaya, Thanks and yes that's the wig, very light weight for how long it is.

    Gold, you're killing me.

You ladies look lovely in the wigs, both look like it's your own hair!

I'm home now and BFF gave me the auburn wig, I may wear it when I need a change, and want to feel like a 'different me'. LOL

Wow, great to see photos of you pretty ladies!
    You both look fabulous.

My mom has worn wigs off and on throughout her life (she INSISTED that I wear a "fall" when I was a young teenager so I'd look like Marlo Thomas in That Girl--no way would my fine hair hold that gravity defying flip) but I don't think she has a Raquel Welch wig. I'll check it out!
