The only thing I've heard consistently about wigs is that they're so freakin' hot to wear. I've heard from at least a couple of female cancer patients who lost their hair due to the chemo, but decided that the discomfort of wearing a wig just wasn't worth it and chose to bare their heads instead.

Has your mom consulted with a doctor about her thinning hair? I don't know much about treatments, but I know that my ex regrew his thinning hair quite nicely after pharmaceutical intervention!

I heard that too, aj. My late MIL had the aggressive part of her chemo during summer months. She had a wig but only wore it on occasions she felt up to church or an outing. Her preference was for a little turban type scarf with bangs, the wig was just too uncomfortable after awhile. (A little OT, but thinking of that made me smile, she sure looked pretty in those little head scarves. ;)

If she persists, then maybe you and sis could go in together and buy her a Mother's Day, Birthday, Christmas gift of a real human hair wig. The photos of wigs always look nice . . .

I have 6 wigs in different lengths and colors, though the colors aren't far from my real hair color.

Why do I have them? I don't need them because my hair is thick and healthy. It's just a cosmetic thing with me. If my hair doesn't look quite right or if I haven't shampooed it, then on goes a wig.

I've ordered from TWC and Paula Young. My most expensive wig is a real hair Raquel Welch wig. It's nice because I
can use a curling iron on it. However, the synthetic wigs just retain their style and don't go limp in humid weather.

I like the first style you've shown. My advice is to measure and then not order a wig with too bushy a style. Then take it to a hairderesser to cut and style to fit your mom's taste.

Caution with blondes and browns, some of the shades in the non-gold colors tend to be a bit ashey. If you can order a color ring ahead of time, do so.

Also, when the wig comes out of the box, the first reaction is, "This isn't what I ordered!" That's because the wig has been styled for the photo; you're seeing the raw product when it first arrives.

My DS and I did talk about getting her a nice one but we were wondering if they were going to be HOT to wear. Maybe she should get a cheaper one and try it around the house first to see if she can deal with it. As her hair starts to grow longer underneath I would think it would be hard to fit it all under. Also wondered if her scalp would get itchy.

She hasn't went to the doc about it and at this point don't know that she would. We've been bugging her to get a physcial because she hasn't had one in a long time and she still hasn't done that.

She was using Nixxon hair products but wasn't seeing a different so she stopped.

Mona - Must have posted at the same time. Thanks for the advice. I did order a sample of the hair colors from the one site I was on because I had a feeling, like anything else, they'd vary greatly from what was online. You're happy with the synthetic ones you ordered? I'm a licensed hairdresser so shaping it up to her liking would be no prob and is a great idea! Do you use the products recommended from the site(s) for taking care of them?

Thanks Sheesharee my sister took that pic over at her house. But trust me it is very thin and fly away and I have fought this a lot of my life.

Tell your mom that sythetic wigs are very thick and shiny and quite wigy. If she does go that route have it thinned and thinned more.

She may want to go with a short human hair wig although it has to be done as well.
Someone mentioned Rachael Welsh's wig's above and her wigs look great.

It's a B--ch to get old, but...

Jane, my sister in law has the thinnest hair ever! She went to a hair replacement salon and they made a mold of her scalp and ordered a wig to her specifications. Then they permanently attached the wig to the lightweight mesh cap made from her mold. They shaved a circle of her scalp at the top and glued the mesh cap to her head. Then the wig was cut and styled to fit her.

This is a simplified version of the procedure, but basically this is what is done. She goes back every 3 months for a reattachment and the wig lasts about 1½ years.

She gets hair with a slight bit of natural curl to it and she either lets it dry natural or blows it dry. Being that's it's real hair she can use a curling iron as well.

I think the initial investment is around $650.

Jane, I agree that synthetics can look wiggy, but I've found it depends on the style I select. Some I have are so real looking that my hairdresser doesn't even know I'm wearing it until I take it off.

Shee, I use a shampoo for synthetic hair, rinse and shake them out to dry. The style bounces back so they're low maintenance.

Jane - your photo looks like a picture of me with the face changed out! Sorry, don't have the guts to post a photo of myself.

The best thing I have come up with for my hair is to wash it every day, and then roll it on velcro rollers and let it dry naturally. The only advantage to skimpy hair is that it dries really quickly! Oh, and I use shampoo every other day to keep it from drying out. I can wash and set my hair on rollers quicker than other women can blow dry their hair.

I'm waiting to win the lottery and then I'm going to have a hair transplant and move hair from the back to the front - LOL!

I do use velcrow curlers sometimes too and I like them. Although usually I fry my hair with the curling iron and bleach. So, I need to stop doing that.

The funny thing is no one seems to know the problem I have with my hair except my family. And it would be sudden death if they talked outside of the family. Meanwhile I plaster my face all over the internet. But hey ya'll are friends, no?

My mom use to wear a wig all the time because her hair was so thin. One day we took some of the neighbor kids to Kings Dominion. We got on a very high, very fast roller coaster and you guessed it, her wig blew off and I swear if you could have seen the little boys face sitting next to her you would have died laughting. She didn't care one bit, we laughted for years over that. Yes, there are some major drawbacks!

I have to say, I am constantly thinking about buying a wig when I see Toni Bratton on the Home Shopping Network (when I can't sleep at night). They make it look so easy to change your hairstyle (and/or color! I'd love to be a blonde for an evening out) and her wigs look easy to wear. It has a mesh thing so it isn't as hot as the rest. But I don't know since I've never bought one. I've been known to wear a hair piece just to change up my style, so I probably will some day.

You are beautiful! I see nothing wrong with your hair at all... My Sandy's mom is a red head whose hair is see through and very, very thin. She has a beautiful wig but I don't know what type she has. Her wig makes her look years younger! She doesn't wear it all the time but when she does, she looks like Sharon Osborn. LOL!

My hairdresser cut my hair so short and it's very wavy and poofy at the top. My DD likes it but I can't wait until it grows out a bit.

Are we ever happy with what we have? I keep reminding myself of that poor woman who was attacked by her friend's chimp. None of us has anything to complain about.

Jane, I know I don't know you but . . . you have great features and look like the kind of woman to me who could carry off a very short haircut. I know several women who have done it and look fantastic! Maybe another option?

Jane, from your pic, you do have thin hair, but, not the kind of thin hair I would look at and say "hey, she's got really thin hair!" I think you are adorable and your cut and highlights are really cute. I wish I had thicker hair, cuz I LOVE hair and haircuts and hair products-I should have been a hairdresser! I don't think you need a wig, I really don't.

Here is an embarrassing wig story: I used to work with a teacher (I hardly knew) who was in her 50's, and me being the hair nut, noticed her hair, and it was so pretty and I loved the cut. I told her one day, that I just loved her hair and I went on and on about it, until, she finally (probably thinking I knew she had on a wig, but I truly didn't) told me it was a wig. I don't think she wanted to tell people. I then felt so embarrassed and now I see her in town sometimes and just duck my head. It was a beautiful head of hair though!

Robin---I've heard of those wigs on home shopping. But I thought about a hairpiece that is human and can't be detected. I can spot a wig a million miles away, but I use to be a hairdresser a million years ago. (lol)

Jane, maybe it is your haircut that is different. Is it longer and a tad straighter now? I keep scrolling up and down, trying to be picky about your hair. To me, it just looks like an updated hairstyle.

Has your hair dresser noticed it thinning? If so, run to the DR. and get some hormones. If you go bald as a side effect of replacement hormones, at least the cancer will be a good excuse. LOL!

Seriously, I have noticed my hair is much better (thicker, shinier with more body) since I began taking hormones. It was starting to feel dry and brittle (like old lady hair) but now it feels like it used to.

I don't know why the sweater went back......because it made you look too sexy?

I see the difference in your hair since you pointed it out, but I think if I hadn't known your worries, I would have just thought it was the straighter cut. And I am enough of a woman to know better than to tell another woman to stop worrying about her hair/nose/eyes/butt/legs/hands/chin, etc. We all have something. And for many of us it's something that isn't an item in the eyes of others. I think you are strikingly pretty and simply have fine hair.

Boo on the wig. Unless the hair is thinning out completely and there is no other styling option, don't fool with it Sheesharee........

Jane, I think Golddust hit it on the head with calling it an updated style. The cut in the first pic just looks more current to me. I also don't look at that and think, man she has thin hair! Seriously, I don't remember how old you said you were. (60s I think. .? ) You really look great and I hope when I'm older people will look at me and think I looks years younger too. :)

Goldust--Maybe I will try hormone replacement at this point, it couldn't hurt. I think I need to stop worrying about it. Stress can kill you.

Jane, I just started my 4th month of HRT and I swear my hair suddenly feels familiar again! It has so much more body. Today I didn't even put conditioner in it because it feels so healthy without. Heck, I was going for the heavy duty moisturizer conditioners before and my hair was fly away frizzy and wouldn't do anything I asked - which was not much at all.

It sounds like there is only so much you are willing to give up and I can't blame you. I'd try HRT first (3 full months) and if that doesn't work, promise yourself that $2,700. wig.

NOW! Stop worrying because either way, your hair is going to be OK. Either with hormones or hair replacement therapy, which ever works. You are too pretty to let a little thing like hair get in the way of your confidence and happiness. $2,700. isn't that much money to spend on something big that can be fixed.

Why do we justify so much money easily on our houses and then cheap out on the things that keep us from sleeping well at night? No one should cry themselves to sleep when a mere $2,700. could fix it.

Yes, we may be vain. So what! Try the hormones, but don't rule out the wig! I bet a new leg would cost lots more... Be grateful it is only hair you need. LOL!

Toronto is a long way from Alabama and I don't have a passport so I would have to fly out of Canada the same day. Of course I have a sister and brother outside Detroit which is only three hours from there. I have friends that have had tons of plastic surgery and they wouldn't think twice about doing this. The funny thing is I have never said a word to them about my hair, like it's a sin or my fault, no matter.
