actually, when i measured again i get 1 quart (4 cups) of water coming out everytime i drain the water out.

sr712: how are you setting up your drain hose? Is it about or below the washer top level? etc

I'd say I get about a quart. I was surprised.

Haven't noticed any noise like you describe, though.

Hi folks...is that normal? Is the water murky/dirty or clear? I would think that there would be no water left in the washer at all after a completed cycle.(?!)

Yes, I think it's normal for LG. I think it's due to the fact that it uses compression technology.

The water is completely clear, not murky.

heres the official word from LG. Took me about a week to get a complete answer:

After consulting with the tech support department, yes it is normal for a quart of water to drain out after every wash. It is also normal for the water to still be in the tub after the wash is complete as well. The reason it can not drain all the water out is because of the design of the drain pump. The water in the sump will help to stop sewer gas from backing up into the system.

Do you have to drain the LG after using??????????????Why is this done?

Does your LG Front Loading Washing Machine smell like mildew? How about your towels? Have you owned your washer for a year or more? Try shining a flashlight directly back to the drum wall. Look in between the tiny grates. You will be horrified at what you see! What I saw was a nasty layer of mold and mildew that I could not reach to clean. The LG technician said to run a few cycles with 1/4 Cup of Cascade and 1 Cup of Bleach. So far I've run two cycles AND I tried squirting bleach directly through the grid with a spray bottle. No luck. Sure, its a little cleaner, but how many cycles do I need to run? And what about the the parts that are inaccessible to my spray bottle? I'm very allergic to mold. Little did I know that I was clothing myself with it everyday. That explains a lot in terms of how I've been feeling. I DIDN'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH MY TOP LOADING WASHING MACHINE!!

My top load washer Also has a swishing sound and has water left. I can’t see it but it actually sounds like a lot too. It smells horrible after a day or two and I don’t like how my clothes smell. I spent so much money on this washer and I just wanna go out and get another one. I’m extremely disappointed about this. Everyone I talk to says this does not sound normal to have your washing machine smell as a Toploader and have water swishing at the bottom.

Many toploaders have water-filled (sealed) gyroscopic balance rings integral to the spin basket that may make a swishing sound. You didn’t state the brand & model for confirmation. Toploaders are susceptible to odor depending on usage habits, same as frontloaders.

Many washers, both frontload & topload, have gyroscopic balance rings on the drum. Whirlpool & Kenmore toploaders have since the early 1980s. The orginal Maytag Neptune frontloader design introduced in 1999 has a balance ring. The rings are half-filled with water at factory production & sealed. The ballast water cannot leak out and dirty wash water cannot get into them unless the ring is cracked from damage. Current Speed Queen frontloaders I believe have mineral oil & ball bearings in their rings which auto-adjust by drum oscillations to balance the spin.

Regards to residual water (from the last rinse) left in the pump sump, all washers (and dishwashers) do that 1) to keep seals from drying out and 2) because the pumps cannot push 100% of the water up and out of the drain hose.
