combustion air

I live in a condo that is 2 years old. The furnance draws air from within the room. The building inspector said that if he had been on the job at the time of inspection, he would not have approved it. He suggested installing pvc to the attic since i cannot go outside for the fresh air. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

There's a good bit of 'crud' (dust and insulation particulate)in attic air. Try peeking in attic with lights off and shine a flashlight around. While some of it might be incinerated, some might get through. Wouldn't want to be breathing that.

Does you furnace have a 'port' for outside combustion air, or is the inspector suggesting a 'pipe in a bucket' set up? Where is your furnace located in relation to outside walls?

I realize that your condo association might have something to say about it, but since your unit is new, when it's time to replace your equipment, you may only be able to install high efficiency equipment (requires pvc pipes, frequently installed through the wall).

Suggest you bring it up at next association meeting.

BTW, with outside air, you will be more comfortable. Do you get static shocks in the winter?

Thank You for your response. I only have 2 choices for the outside combustion air intake for the high efficiency furnance, in the room or the attic. I will definitly take what you said under consideration.
    Thanks again

"While some of it might be incinerated, some might get through. "

How is combustion air going to enter the circulating air?

Heat exchangers are there to prevent this or combustion products (CO2, CO, and water vaopor0 would enter the conditioned air.

You might need to make sure all ducts around the furnace are sealed (especially the return ducts) but that is all that should be needed to prevent air intended as combustion air from entering the circulating air.

You're right, Brick. Wasn't thinking clearly when I wrote that.
