Kitchen paint

Please Advise: I am nearing the end stretch of a mini- kitchen remodel. Kept most cabinets, which are love-it or hate-it Natural Rustic Oak of superior quality, handcrafted c. 2000. I'm going for a modern+rustic vibe. This time around, I've chosen stainless steel backsplash and lovely soapstone counters with minimal veining. I think I prefer the counters oiled. The issue that I have is that once the flashy backsplash and appliances have gone in, the *wow* factor from the counters seems diminished. The stainless doesn't exactly compete with the soapstone, but... I just feel like I need to bring in some dark to emphasize the soapstone. I do have those over-cabinet soffits and they had to stay, so my plan is to paint those. Since I want zero competition from the cabinets themselves, I will be going with a greige, or possibly a very dark grey, like Behr's Antique Tin, or Martha Stewart's "Zinc". I did buy sample of Behr's "Pencil Point" but I really don't care for that. Oh, reclaimed natural oak floors thru-out, Southern exposure, lots of light. The more i look the more confused I get. Please help!

    pictures would help : )

The minute you place a few items of color on to the countertop you'll get your "wow" back again. The eye goes to color first.

I'm going to try to post pics later.... I'm mobile at the moment so unable. But I will try later. Many many thanks, all of you GWebbers are so talented and smart, and you have no idea how much I've been inspired by all of you so far! Thanks!

Im having troubles uploading pics, but here is daytime pic that gives you an idea of the space, layout. There is not yet backsplash in the pic, and the lighting isnt completely done yet either. under the window is the sink, to the left of that is the DW & MW, further left is SS fridge, and left of that is floor-to-ceiling chef's cabinet. Daytime i see red, but in evening especially the cabinets sort of exude an orange glow and that I really hate. More pics to follow.

Ok and here is range and backplash in that area. SS around, up and around window in same manner as range hood area.

Here is fabric that I will use to sew a Roman Shade for the window.

I have similiar toned cabinets and I was thinking of using BM tea light (sage greenish), but your window treatment fabric won't go. Are you set on that fabric? It's easier to find a fabric you like to coordinate with paint than it is to find a paint to go with red fabric.

The white appliances provide too much contrast with the wood and black counters. Look for either some black ones or stainless ones on Craigslist if your budget is tapped out already. And paint a darker red than the red in the fabric. Oak is orange, and the only way to neutralize that orange is to use colors that also have a red or yellow undertone.

I can't tell what your cabinet hardware is from the photos, but if you're going to change it and want to emphasize the stone, you could use the knobs with black pebbles.

Thank you for the input! Yes, the white does clash! As those appliances die, I'll replace them with SS to match the fridge. I cook here so unless I see that 8 burner Viking on CL, what's here stays until I replace it! I don't dare try that paint stuff, too many negative experiences out there.

About the hardware, there is no visible hardware on these cabs. They are Prestige Rutledge... & you can't buy them anymore :( (i tried) I will try to post some pics later of the hardware, it is one of my favorite features of these cabs. But if there were handles, I'd definitely do black pebbles. That would be cool.

I'm not set on the fabric. But I did see that Martha's "Cement Gray MSL266" seems to be a close match to the grey in the fabric! I only chose the fabric b/c I couldn't choose a paint. In the daylight I like the way Martha's "Zinc MSL267" appears on the soffit... I just cant say I can live with that choice. And I am not set on Martha's paint whatsoever, just grabbed those from where I was. Now the guy at Home Depot told me that "Pencil Point" has black + red. Again, not sure that I can look at that everyday. I can't even Inspire myself to put the sample up there. How can I find out (without asking the guy at HD) about undertones? I am color challenged.

A couple more things: this kitchen is open on 3 sides to great room. Family room is Behr "Sandstone Cove" (yellow undertone, right?) and drapes in there are a silvery sage color, looks very grey in daylight, but greener toward evening. I love green but I'm just not seeing how to make it work in this space. I honestly own like 3 different unused gallons of green paint at the moment!

Last thing, the island is completely unfinished, unstained right now. I was tossing around the idea of throwing some color on it, being met with resistance from DH. Any thoughts?

Well many thanks again, please keep your ideas coming!

I think a color on the island would be fantastic. A greyish green would look good-any of your unopened cans that shade? ;) I would go with that on the walls, too.

I so want to paint the island, but DH has forbidden it, since "he built it."

The paint I have, if you can google it, includes Behr "Wilderness". The ColorSmart app created a palette for me with the Sandstone Cove, Wilderness, and Harvest Brown. I've painted the inside of a window seat w/ the Harvest Brown (next to Sandstone Cove) in the northern facing room, that I love and it's great. But In the kitchen on the soffit, the Harvest Brown looks pukey and gross. And I think the Wilderness is just too dark and not olive-y enough. Figure I'll use it on furniture! LOL

I have been searching other posts and found Restoration Hardware Sea Green. Do you all think that might work or is that too green? Any grey suggestions? I'd like to find 3 shades of grey, light, med, dark to use thru out the open space, I think.

Still curious about RH, I have not found that sold locally near me, so that has a pin in it.

On the other hand, I have spent probly way too much time on google (&here) viewing other people's grey paint schemes. That led to me to my SW dealer yesterday where I found "Feather gray 2127-60, Deep Poinsetta 2091-30"... And I'm still liking the darker grays too.

Was offered unsolicited advice yesterday (from in laws) to paint my soffit the deep Poinsetta, or another red of the same intensity, just with "more yellow". Any thoughts? Many thanks!

I can see stainless appliances in there. And perhaps painting that island red - fun!!

Ok, thank you all. I know that I need to get the stove & DW upgraded to SS for the look to look right!

Went with BM's Mars Red. And I love BM's Regal Select. Looks great next to the oak. Now I'm debating Helen Foster's stencil....Dilly, hopefully that's where I can bring in some green. I love green and honestly I don't mind it with red, just has to be done right! Please check my other thread for the link and advise. Thank you live_wire_oak for telling me to go red. .
