Thermostat wiring nightmare

I got a new digital thermostat and wired it the same way the old thermostat was wired (which was odd)

I wired it the following way

Power - RC

Fan Relay - G

Yellow wire - Matched old stat to Y

White wire- Matched old stat to O

My A/C worked but my heat did not. The fan simply comes on when the heat is supposed to kick on.

I then tried the white wire in the W1 terminal and it had the same effect.

I just tried the white wire in the Y terminal and yellow wire in the W1 terminal and now my heat works and a/c just turns the fan on.

Anyone know what is going on?

What kind of system do you have? What kind of thermostat did you buy? I wouldn't play around with the wires, as you can cause damage. If your system was wired strangely to begin with, your best bet is to have a professional look your system over and see how it's wired at the actual unit.

I bought a pretty standard thermostat that works will all types of systems. It is here http://www.ritetemp-thermostats.com/images/6030_installation_guide.pdf

I have a Trane system. It was manufactured in 1989.

I actually checked it at the unit in my attic and the W and Y terminals don't even have wires running to them. The a/c and heat wires go to the condensing unit but there are 8 for my building and I don't even know which one is mine because they aren't labeled.

Are you sure you don't have a heat pump? O is a heat pump connection.
Also, did you follow the jumper directions for the t'stat.

a jumper wire is needed from RC to RH RC is for cooling and RH is for heating what size is you a?C unit

I did set the jumpers in the right locations. I think the system does have a heat pump. The condensers mention a heat pump anyways. I thought the RC and RH were jumped in the thermostat already. I'll make my own jumper and test it.

I believe it is a 3 ton unit. It only cools 1000 sq ft.
