Hello, your room is very nice. Whereas you said you had to keep the carpet, I think that may be the problem. The carpet is so dark that your eyes are drawn downward, if you could do some minor adjusting and balancing, I think you would be content.

lovely room, the rug is awesome! since it is a bold piece a little more balance around the room is all that is needed. Add more black in a throw of the couch, black lamps & or Shades, more black in the display shelf, the console table looks a little "weak" a bigger more substancial piece would balance that side of the room. You are on the right track !

Your room has a lot of lovely elements, but IMO it would benefit from the organic warmth of wood. As mentioned previously, a more substantial console / credenza / buffet would be useful and also inject that element of warmth. The room is a little 'leggy' too. Removing the existing console table and plant stand and substituting more substantial pieces would help with that.

I'd also consider placing the smaller sofa in the bay window, with chairs nearby. Similar furniture arrangement in front of fireplace.

Love the wallpaper in what looks to be the foyer.

I agree with mjlb that this room needs wood in it. I think you need to switch out the table under the mirror to a wood one with bit more heft:

I really love the sofa, but the pillows are so close to the pattern of the rug. Also the pictures over the chairs look top heavy.

As for the smaller sofa in the window, i was thinking of removing the sofa and replacing with two chairs... any thoughts on that. Also is a spash of color someplace a good idea?perhaps its best to work on some of the other suggestions first!

I love your room! First of all, I would addd end tables to the sofa, then buy new pillows for the sofa to freshen things up. You could bring in some fun colors and textures! Also, you might want to rethink the corner with the plant stand...maybe do a gallery wall, and get a smaller stand? Beef up your existing lamps with larger shades! Good Luck.

Beautiful beginning but you left the FP out of the pics and I think that may be a spot where you could up the beautification effort. Please post pics of it as all we can see is its reflection in the ornate mirror. Suggest that everything on the wall with the ornate mirror and leggy credenza be removed and replaced with the large sofa and the new tables others have suggested. If those prints are a matched pair bring them 6" apart and 6" above the sofa back. The smaller sofa can move the the spot where the larger sofa was. Purchase a chaise to place in the bay window with your swing arm floor lamp. Several have mentioned the need for some wood, and I'd suggest a large wood credenza in the recess to the right of the fireplace. Maybe the print over the FP would look good above the credenza and the ornate mirror above the FP. Please post it for some more input.

I love the room and the color scheme. I think the coffee table is too big and therefore the sofas too far apart and with it being glass you do see alot of the rug. Consider using two small tables (like aggiedesigns suggests) or a couple of ottomons for a coffee table and bring the sofas closer together. This might also hide more of your rug and allow the little vignet you have going on in the window to be seen better. Also consider painting the chairs in the window area vignet black. They will show up better against the ivory curtains and help balance that side of the room.

As long as you have the bold rug, I would remove those printed pillows from the sofa and add your color (bright red?) with pillows and with another same color accessory or two somewhere in the room. I say red because that plant (poinsettia?) on your hall table really pops!

On that note, I think your hall table needs to be more substantial in size, such as a chest, and remove the black rug in front of it. Love the chairs in your hallway! Maybe you could move your existing hall table behind your sofa as a console and add a lamp to it instead of the floor lamp. Either way definitely change your lampshade on your floor lamp or get a more substantial funky black floor lamp.

hi... see attached photos of FP and what i have in the front window.. I agree with the addition of the wood console and am looking for a piece now... this has been on my mind for a while but the communication on houzz motivates me to move forward. The frame on the piece over the FP is wood.. Additinally, i have the table in the front window which is my favorite piece, but really no other place to put it in the home. I feel like the smaller sofa is blocking the path and the view of the windodw/table. All the comments are so helpful! thanks

The room is absolutely gorgeous. If I were to do anything, it would be to add a low hanging light fixture over the coffee table.

If the carpet is bothering you, trade your glass coffee table for a wooden one and you'll see less of the carpet.

so a couple of thoughts... the rug does bother me but regardless of what i think i am wondering what would be better. Also, i have wanted it get rid of the coffee table more than the rug, so that makes it kind of easy. If any of you are familiar with Jonathan Adler i like many of his coffee tables and am considering the white marble or the black crock table (but black might be too much) ?

How about using your hall chairs in place of one of the sofas?

If you don't like the black in the rug, I doubt you'll like the black coffee table.

I think the FP and your round table are enough marble. Will that round table fit in the area near the stairs? Looks like there is a drop leaf table with a large arrangement to the left of the white chair. How big is the drop leaf? Would it fit on the wall to the right of your bay window or is it too large? I'm big on re-design so it helps me to see more of your furnishings. You never know what item in the bedroom will work perfectly in the living room. At first I thought about having the marble table top put on a lower pedestal for a coffee table, but is is much too large. I think you have the option of putting the nude over a wood credenza or above the sofa, if you weight the sofa with dark colored pillows to match the shades in the nude. Would depend on where you go with the ornate mirror. Two heavy pieces on the same wall won't work very well since they would be so close to each other. If you shop for a credenza keep in mind that you want it long enough so those two prints could be snugged together a few inches above it.

The table underenath the stairs next to white chairs is a square and of course...marble. i will send a photo, it is not a drop leaf either. The table in the front is the saarinen table from DWR. I think the most likely scenario is for me is to move the wood nude over new wood credenza, the mirror would then be moved over the FP.. Also, i do plan to put art work on either side of the fireplace when i find just the right pieces...
Per all this wonderful feedback i think i will do the following: wood credenza, new coffee table or ottoman, new pillows for the sofa (i really love the idea of red or yellow) and new lamps...for the short term. Long term............................................lots more to come!

I do love your marble table. Here's an idea on using a tall table with a sofa.

You've been consistent in your choices, which is good. But a little loosening up may be in order. I'd try the large nude painting either on the wall near the built-in china cabinet, or to the right of the fireplace. I'd move the two b+w pieces from hall to fireplace mantel.

Your home and decor is lovely - the suggestions are good - 10 minutes ago you posted and it sounds like you have a direction - look forward to seeing the inspiration from the suggestions -

yes i do... if there are any specific ideas on pillows/colors i would love to hear. Also any samples or suggestions on coffee table or ottomans (as use of coffee table would be great)

I have not problem with the rug, the white/black piped loveseat, or the pillows. Yes, you need end tables of some sort, but I agree with other suggestions that you need balance. A very large wooden or black painted mirror propped on the floor? Also, the bay window looks lackluster. Maybe put plantation shutter only on the bottom of the windows? Or add bamboo shades to layer under the drapes? Or add weight and depth to the drapes by edging them in a three inch border of black on the sides and a 10 inch border of black on the bottom. Also, a long upholstered bench on the right side (first pic) of the coffee table to create more of a seating niche. The loveseats look a little lonely and this might bring them together. Suggest a charcoal gray for the bench upholstery.
