Livingroom help...

Hi...I have just moved into a home we completed at the beginning of December. I have already purchased a sofa but I need some opinions re whether I should purchase two comfortable chairs or have a sofa and loveseat or maybe even a sofa, loveseat and chair? As you can see I am clueless!! Kids are grown and gone but I still need seating etc for entertaining and when people bunk with us. I also need suggestion re what I should do about the area above the fireplace.

I am going to try for and post a couple of pics, the odds and ends that are in the pics are there because I literally threw out all of our previous living furniture. It is all I have left. The living room is an open concept area with stairs on one side and wall of windows and door on other side. Thanks for your help!!!

Beautiful room and view! What are the dimensions of the room? Do you have a picture of the couch? Are you keeping that area rug? if so, what are its dimensions?

What a beautiful room with a gorgeous view you have! Wow!! The room appears to be large enough to easily accommodate a couch, loveseat and a chair, along with a coffee table, end tables, perhaps a console table and more. It's a good sized room and it would be such a treat to decorate and furnish such a delightful space. Good luck! Significant artwork above the fireplace would be my first choice, something original that was framed in black would be ideal.

Sofa facing fireplace; another sofa facing windows and swivel chairs closet to windows. I would use the swivel chairs so that the people can swing around and face the view or the center of room. Fantastic view!!!!

Acck! Forgot to include the dimensions. I guess that would help. The livingroom is approx 19 feet long 18 feet wide. The sofa I purchased is 91 inches long and seems to fit the space. It is a leather sofa, rich brown color, with rolling arms etc. That is the other question I would have. Would I use leather on the love seat and fabric on the chairs or would that be too much leather? The rug in the pic is appox 8ft x 10 ft. But I think I might have to move it to the dining area. It might be too small? As you can see I need alot of help and appreciate any input....thanks for the input so far!

We live on Vancouver Island BC Canada and in the distance if you look closely because it was a cloudy day you can see the Olympics in Washington State. The house has a mountain home type vibe and that is what we are going for with a bit of a modern twist. Probably why decorating is becoming a problem for me.

No advice, but I wanted to say you have a very cool room and a view that is to die for!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say large sofa facing the fireplace with narrow table behind it with interesting objects on it to hide back of sofa, love seat perpendicular to the sofa and two chairs on the other side. Perhaps a large glass coffee table with wood side tables between the chairs and love seat and sofa with lamps and some beautiful objects. Great wall art with something spectacular over the fireplace. I would consider painting the mantel white. Totally gorgeous room. A very large and gorgeous Persian would give warmth. I don't know that I would introduce more leather furniture, but then I'm not a leather fan. Large floor plants by the windows. You have an utterly gorgeous space!

I'm with Ingrid. Also, chairs and a love seat gives you many options when you want to re-arrange furniture!

with a view like that, no one will even notice furniture!

    STUNNING!!!!!

Personally, I would stop with the leather couch, and have all the other upholstered furniture be fabrics that coordinate well together. A glass coffee table would be ideal, or some dark iron with a stone-type top would also be pretty. I love a great leather sofa, but think one large piece in leather would be enough.

Congratulations on your move to your beautiful new home. What a great room and fantastic view!! Notice how everyone mentions the view? Therefore, I would place your new leather sofa like you have the black bench now. Take full advantage of that view! Would a comfortable club chair with a matching ottoman work, angled so that you'd face the fireplace or the view out the window? Do those doors to the deck open out? Or in? And yes. My feeling is you need a much more substantial rug for your area. Another question....I am not seeing floor outlets? Are they planned? If your builder is waiting for your furniture placement before he installs them, so much the better. You should have fun doing this room. Oh - and is there a reason your mantle is bare wood? I'm feeling it white also.

I would do two matching sofas facing each other and then two smaller chairs facing the fireplace with a coffee table in the middle of the u-shape.

I just linked soofriver's home in another thread and she has this set up. I'll try to link the exact picture but if I can only link to her site, then look at the living room pics.

Thanks once again for all of your great suggestions! To answer some questions...

The doors open out to the deck. I do need to install floor plugs. They have not been installed yet but my husband is an electrician so I will get him to do that once I get my furniture plan figured out. I have to agree with all of you re the size of the rug. I will have to see what I can dig up. Re the mantle. It looks alot smaller in the pic than what it is in real life. It is a 5 inch thick chunk of fir that was stained the same color as the soffits (you can see them in the view pic and the post and beams that you can see from the other windows. It was a risk I took because as I mentioned before I was trying to make the living room area more casual. I will post a few pics of the outside of the house so that you can sort of see what I mean. We still need to do some work on the balcony on the front of the house. Thanks for all of your help.
