Lighting over kitchen sink

We have remodeled our kitchen and I'm trying to come up with a good lighting plan for over the sink. There is a shelf(which is six feet wide), with a six inch valence, four feet above the sink.

We have thought of a four foot fluorescent fixture with a warm lite. Five xenon surface mounted puck lights(line voltage). Or possibly three or four mini pendants.

Would the puck lights put out enough light over the sink?

As for the pendants, are you forced to use the twelve inch rod they all seem to come with or can you cut it? I'd probably like the rod at six inches so just the light itself was visible.

I'd appreciate it if anyone has any tips.
