carpet

What are the "rules" of color for carpeting and furniture.

I am getting new carpet and cannor pick out a color, nothing looks good with my furniture. Should you match the furniture color or contrast it.

My couch is olive green, more on the deep side, and the chair is a print with mix of the green and some goldish brown, and a tinge of cranbury.

BTW....I am looking at the Smartstrand by Mohawk, wondering if anyone has it, and how it holds up to crushing.

You'll probably have the carpet longer than the furniture; at any rate you'll want to let your furnishing "evolve" over time and the carpet will still be there. So I wouldn't match the furniture. I'd blend it with the wall paint (doesn't need to match, just try to add a neutral back ground for your furniture). Neutral can be almost any color that you like. If you have patterned draperies that work with your furniture, pull a color from them. If they're plain, try looking at multi-color carpets. This is my rule of thumb (not cast in concrete, but I find it helpful and we've made a number of moves). If you pulled all of your furniture out of the house/room, would the room(s) look like they belong? In other words, do the paint, carpet, curtains and draperies still work together? Your furniture is the next layer of decorating.
Bring lots of samples home. They always look different in the house.
That's just my opinion, of course. But it works for me. I have to think about replacing our carpet soon and I dread it. I think it's one of the hardest decorating decisions to make -- but one of the most rewarding. Instant gratification when it's finally down! Good Luck.

Thanks for your help. I am still trying to decide, have samples home, and it looks different in every part of the room. It can have a green hue, gray, pink.... driving me crazy.

I have a horrible time making these types of decisions. My only suggestion is to get something in a mid range - too light and it shows dirt and too dark and it shows every thread and hair and dust and goodness knows what.

I would also avoid any odd colors like rusty orange, cranberry or blue - look for something more neutral. I also wouldn't worry about coordinating it to the wall color if you don't mind repainting the room if need be.

littlejake -- that's the thing about carpet (and paint). It will look different in every part of the room and at different times of the day. It's good that you're bringing home samples. Because it looks different here and there doesn't mean that it's wrong here but not there, at certain times of the day. If the color hue is good generally, it will look good when there is a whole big piece of it on the floor. Get a trusted friend to offer up an opinion (but the final decision should be based on your instincts -- it's your home, after all). If the carpet dealer offers consultation services, take advantage of their expert opinions, as well. Consider their opinions and advice, but go with your instincts. Carpeting is a big investment and one that you don't want to regret. It's not like changing wall paint; take your time with it. But my advice would be to keep it neutral in that you can live with it for a long time, regardless of furniture changes. I don't mean beige, or gray or off-white, necessarily, but a color or texture that you like and looks good in your house. If you have a camera and can get onto photobucket -- you can send pictures.

Thanks for all the input...Anyway..I had to choose today, because of a time frame that I want the carpet for.
I went with sort of a medium tan. It is a short kinda of shaggy,so it has shades of light and medium fibers.Hopefully I made the right choice. It is netural, so it can't look horrible.
