Are there any general guidelines for a kitchen lighting plan? I know I should have direct, ambient & task lighting. I just got the lighting plan from my architect and other than the under cabinet lighting & pendants over the island & sink, there are just a whole lot of can lights everywhere. Are there general rules about how far to space these? Or how far away from the counters to place them? The plan has 11 can lights in my 16x16 kitchen.

In addition to all the lights in the kitchen, my new 12x18 back room which opens to the kitchen calls for 12 can lights which just seems overkill to me.
