Decora cabinets at Home Depot

Hi All, I just saw that Home Depot is now selling Decora cabinets. I was impressed with the feel of the drawers and doors and the finishes. They felt like a big step up in quality from Thomasville, Kraftmaid, and the other brands on display. I'm just at the very beginning stage of thinking about new cabinets and I'm learning so much from all the advice on this forum. I am leaning toward white painted uppers and natural cherry or dark painted base cabinets (simple Shaker style, either frameless or framed, inset if budget permits). Alas, I have Crownpoint taste on an Ikea budget. Do you have advice to share about Decora cabinets or buying cabinets at Home Depot? Do you think they really make Decora cabinets in Indiana? Or has the Masterbrand company that owns Decora sent all production overseas?

They are good quality cabinets. No Masterbrand line is made overseas.

If you want Decora, simplify your design, double your budget, and self GC your renovation. They are not cheap cabinets and there is no way to get them on an Ikea budget.

Hi live wire oak: Thanks for the advice. I super appreciate it. I'll have to think aobut the self GC possibility. I did that 12 years ago on a tiny kitchen renovation project and it was a big savings.

I have Decora cabs in cherry mink. My island is maple the color of eggshell. There are nice cabinets and look quite custom.

Dear storklady, Thanks for your review of Decora cabinets. We don't have a huge kitchen (9 base cabinets and three uppers) so I'm thinking I may be able to swing a slightly higher priced, higher quality cabinet.

I was also suprised to see them at HD. Not to be too cynical, but I'm wondering if what HD is offering is a cheaper quality line of Decora. I have heard (can't confirm that it is true) that when HD markets major brands (like American Standard, etc.) they provides slightly lower quality versions of the product than you would get an independent dealer. I'll price Decora out at both HD and an independent dealer. I'm just at the beginning stage of cabinet selection and welcome all advice.

I,too, have a small kitchen. 7 lowers, 5-7 uppers depending on the design. I was quoted $13,500 for Decora painted maple. When I tried negotiating, the KD came down to $12,500. Still not what I wanted to pay for cabinets.

So, my husband and I took the bull by the horns and went the ikea route. Bought the cabinets with inexpensive temporary fronts. Our intention is to purchase custom cabinet fronts and hand paint them with Farrow and Ball paint to get the custom look we want. When all finished, we will be at half of what Decora was going to be.

We have our cabinets installed with our inexpensive fronts and we are thrilled with the quality and the layout we designed.

Dear chicagochristina, Thanks for your Ikea advice. I'd love to see pictures of your cabinets and kitchen. Have you posted on FKB?

My cabinets are peeling on all the doors and some shelves, the molding and trim have separated from the boxes. My kitchen is a disaster! Decora refuses to replace in any way. With Decora you need a new kitchen every couple of years!!

Please, avoid Decora at all means. We had a very, very horrible experience with Decora when we did our kitchen remodel around Sept. 2011. The whole project was delayed for more than 4 weeks due to their problems. Look at the video here:

Yuan, I watched your video and the damage seems to be from handling. Did you inspect them when they arrived? Also the cabinet with no finish on the side that is visible, why did you install it that way? I got to believe they would accept a return for damage done in shipping. The finish needed to be specified as to which end so whoever ordered them did it wrong.

I just redid my kitchen with Decora cabinets from Home Depot, I saw the same cabinets at a very high end kitchen remodeling showroom. I saved $13,000 with Home Depot. Great quality, I didn't use their quartz counter tops, too cheap looking. Mix and match! Love the cabinets.

Hi jczinc, I am about to order mine from Home Depot. Can you please tell me what your door style is? Looks like Prescott. Thanks a lot!
