Have you ever dealt with Bed Bugs?
Comments (35)I have finally gotten rid of a very small infestation. We had bought some used camping equip and brought it into the house. Within a few weeks we started noticing 1-2 bites on hands or legs. It took another month for the "tell tale signs" to show up on mattress "inspection" (which I was already doing because we live in an urban area = known bed bug infestation possible). We discovered 8-10 adults and quickly ditched the mattress and cleaned the entire room with alcohol. We also moved that same month. I purchased 99% rubbing alcohol and used it as a topical spray over any surface I thought needed it. The alcohol kills on contact. It disolves the exoskeleton of many pests...BTW! At our next house we found a few bites on our son...and discovered a single adult on his mattress. That got tossed and the entire room was "alcohol bombed" every day for the next 2 weeks. I figured he got the adult from a chest of drawers that used to be in our room. That got soaked in rubbing alcohol as well. That was over 3 months ago. Haven't seen signs since then. No bites. No "signs". They have a 2 week incubation period for the eggs to hatch. They take almost 2 months to reach sexual "maturity". This means you have plenty of time to deal with them before they go around replicating. That's why exterminators want to come back in 2 weeks and do the job again. It is the 2 wk time period that means they can get any "bug" that may have hatched inside that time frame. I'm going to keep an eye out for a very long time...but my guess is they are gone. I still have 1L of rubbing alcohol in the cupboard...just in case. And the "heating a room" doesn't work. You have to reach 60 Celsius (140 F) for 30 minutes to kill these guys. Putting clothing in a drier on "high" for 30 minutes works like a charm. "Freezing" them takes even more time and effort. They require -18 Celsius (-3 F) for 2 WEEKS to consider them "dead". As for the "neighbors" house...these guys will travel up to 100 yards to get to the next "home". You would only have to worry if you have your neighbor over for visits or if you go over there. The likelihood the bugs will pack up and leave is pretty slim....See MoreYou spilled WHAT? WHERE?
Comments (63)In high school one of my close friends was over for a party my parents may or may not have known was happening at their house. There was a bad combination of a "hand talker" and a glass of red wine involved and you can guess where the wine ended up... all over the light beige living room carpet. I immediately grabbed the cleaners and was relieved that the carpet wasn't stained but I guess I didn't notice the spots on the walls. Unfortunately my Mom did notice the red wine rain drops decorating her walls when she got home - busted! I've used a ton of different cleaners, one that I have used recently at home in and in our showroom is from Rotostatic and I would highly recommend it! It's taken strawberry vomit from a co-workers kid, and black tar from a nearby parking lot out of our carpets, and now a few of our installers carry a bottle with them on job sites just in case. Whatever you use, just be sure to test it in an inconspicuous spot first to see how it will affect your floors!...See MorePOLL: Which chore would you most like to skip?
Comments (269)Wow clearly we need to all work together. I would very happily clean any kitchen and/or handle all of the household laundry if someone would dust my house and clean my bathrooms. Very interesting to read about chores people enjoy that I avoid like the plague....See MoreWhat's your go-to cleaning tip?
Comments (243)shirley9904 I used sudsy ammonia in the bathrub to soak my mini blinds. Took them outside (standing in a bucket so they didn't drip thru the house) and tossed em up over a clothes line to rinse with a garden hose. Sparkling clean.. even the ones from the kitchen and bath. Those tend to get 'sticky' from the steam and heat from shower and cooking. I've sprayed them after the dry with pledge and wiped them down.. just as you would furniture. Makes them easier to dust off in between the yearly washing of them. I also use pledge on the shower rod. WHEW.. does that make for a fast shower curtain pull!...See Moredickross
