Kitchen Design Input Needed!

I have been lurking, drooling, and dreaming. I have looked at all the finished kitchens and I would like any of them. This is my first kitchen remodel. I have been living in my home over 35 years. The cabinets I have are over 60 years and due for a change. We will not be changing the floorplan to the kitchen, only adding a pass through on the one wall. The cabinet layout is similar to the one I have now, except beefed up with corner cabinets with lazy susans. I was hoping for something different, but KD said that is the best way to utilize the corners. I am not ready to pull the plug as I doubt the designs. My goal is to have an efficient kitchen with easy accessibility, where 2 people can work, organized and simple. However, the more I think about where I want to put my pots and pan, the more I think the corner cabinet by the stove is just not going to cut it. And I really hate the hide and seek to corner cabinets and doubt a lazy susan will solve my problem. I do want cabinet drawers and the only large ones are by the pass through. My husband does like the upper corner cabinets.

Could we please have some ideas and maybe a little creativity? Right now, when we talk with the KD, we are just impressed with the newness of it all. But when I start to think about itÂ

We have a 30" gas stove, 24" dishwasher, and will have a 36" counter depth refrigerator. We also have a custom counter height prep table that serves as an island. We will not be adding an island, rather if we can use the table, great, if not we are thinking of a small butcher block cart. We also have a 36" range hood where the duct work is in the upper cabinets and vented to an outside side wall. We have to stay with l upper cabinets.

Any and all help with be greatly appreciated. I really am having a hard time "seeing" alternatives. Thank you!

There are very talented folks on this forum so I will not give you any feedback on design. From reading your post however, I wanted to give you my 2 cents on the Super Susan and corner cabinets.

Super Susan (aka lazy Susan). When I first joined this forum several years ago, these had a bad rap, but I didnÂt have a choice in my kitchen. After living with one, I started a thread trying to understand why anyone would not love their Susan! I could store more small appliances in that space than in any other cabinet in my kitchen. I had a wide opening and lifting the heavy things like the food processor in and out was very easy. I think you will find that many people on this forum agree with me  these hold a ton of stuff and are easy to use if you have the wide opening.

Other than my Susan, I have all drawers which I also love.

Upper Corner Cabinet. This I would change. We ended up with an angled one like you show and your DH wants. IÂm 5Â7" and found it to be just too difficult to use. I would prefer a cabinet that went all the way to the counter  a look I really like and think would be a better use of space.

Good Luck! I will watch what the masters on this forum have to say. :-)

I really don't see where you can make many changes, unless you close up a doorway. It looks like you do have a lazy susan next to the stove, so I don't understand your concern there. There's no other choice really for the corners. I am wandering why you need a pass-thru right next to the doorway. What exactly is that for ? If you didn't have it, then you could move the fridge down next to the doorway & have a longer usable counterspace between the sink & fridg. What is cabinet # 3 - looks like drawers, that's a good size drawer base.
    Good Luck

I agree with granite-girl on the placement of the pass-through and fridge and would switch them. It will make for a coule more steps between sink and fridge but the longer run of countertop should be worth it.

I wouldn't like the trash pullout next to the range and would rather see it closer to the sink. If your sink will have a disposal, that might make a difference but most garbage is generated between sink and fridge.

Are you sure you want a double sink instead of one large one? It's easier to soak roasting pans, baking sheets, etc. in a large sink.

If you doubt the layout...listen to your inner voice.

It'd be helpful to know what the adjoining rooms/spaces are.

My current kitchen layout is the same as yours, albeit a little smaller and even more cramped in the corners. I feel your pain. I have half-moon retractible lazy suzans in both lower corners and they are awful. I hate them.

I too am planning a remodel and replacing my 70-yo cabinets. I have a blank wall opposite the window wall, so I am converting to a galley style--two straight runs, shifting the doorways on the left and right closer to center. Not sure if you could do that. Looks like you may need at an opening opposite the window wall?

If this is a possibility for you, I can give you more details of my thinking.

i'd agree on the fridge and pass thru.

"There's no other choice really for the corners."

this I don't agree with. the corner can be left dead (or accessed thru the rooms behind them) and drawers used on either side of it (which is my plan to do). you will need to allow filler space (a few inches) in the corners so that the drawers will open past each other.
OR as another poster is considering, there's the actual in the corner drawers now. the other poster has a link on her thread. it's also a thread for LO help and was on p1 also.

I'd also move the trash - between the stove and sink. which would probably then be to the left of the sink, accessible from the stove also.

The angled upper corner cabs are a design preference really. if dh really likes them, I'd let him have them. as a short person i can't reach anything past the first shelf anyway... I'd put in glass doors and use for display if not really, really needed for storage of food/dish items.

depending on how many in your family, how much cooking you do and what you are used to in side space to your stove and what you think you can live with for side space to the stove, i'd think about switching the stove and the fridge spaces. you'd have more side space to the stove if it was on the other wall. of course, then you'd have to switch the venting tho. That'd be a cost and use decision.

is there wall space between the doorways on the bottom of your LO? or is that one big doorway? if wall space and enough space from the counters on either side (allowing enough walking space in/out of the doorways) I'd try to put a shallow cabinet on that wall to use as a pantry (maybe 12-15" deep). a floor to ceiling cab w/ doors. shallow because of the space and easier storage of things - if not deep, things won't get lost in the back of it.

The only other option might be an L shape with frig at the end of the sink run and then an island. The main drawback is the DW will be between the stove and the sink.

Your biggest issue is that you want "to keep the same layout" but want more creativity from your KD. A KD can only be as creative as the client actually really wants! Right now, you've pretty much indicated you don't want creativity. More creativity means more thinking outside the box, and it means potentially NOT keeping the same layout. That means YOU must be willing to think outside the box and potentially change your kitchen layout. You're still in your comfort zone without anything new except a useless (as designed) passthrough.

Start the process with a blank slate with no preconceived ideas as to where items must be and see where that gets you. You may find that closing off some doors, or opening up some walls will spark you into new territory.

Thank you houseful, I was wondering about that same layout, and it really helps to see it. I have no experience and talent for dimensions and space. I also appreciate the info on dead corners, I was beginning to think I had to use 'em.
The pass thru will actually widen the doorway that goes into a sunroom.
    Again, many thanks.

Well, if that's a sunroom, what about opening up the kitchen to the sunroom for added light and more space and maybe an island to snack at? That's what I'm talking about when I say thinking outside the box.
