Can someone talk to me about pulls and knobs?

Are there any rules or tips? Should they match looks of other handles in the kitchen like appliances or faucets? Should the pulls and knobs match? What about sizes anything I should know there? Am I still in overthink mode? We have some substantial size drawers 36" wide and very deep.

Dh likes a cup pull like this one.

I prefer this one.

Please guide me through this maze.

    Hi Xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox!
The link to the ones that you like has a page of several, not one specific. But I get the gist of what you're saying. I don't have any advice on the matching deal - but just an opinion (against) the cup pulls. I don't like having to reach UNDER to pull, and if you have long fingernails, I would think that could be hazardous. hehe
Don't get me wrong, they look great in certain kitchens, but functionality has to weigh in there somewhere. We're getting ALL handles, and we'll probably go with 5 inchers. Hubby wants 6 inchers, but they're just too huge looking. (I negotiated my way up from 4 inchers).
    Good luck!

Okay the one I like doesn't link. From my search (sorry thought it was still messed up) I see that I should at least 5" to 6" if I want one pull to a drawer which I prefer.

Thanks Boxie, you confirmed my fears about the cup pulls. I am going to go with handles also.

Are there any rules or tips?

    Nope...to each their own!

Should they match looks of other handles in the kitchen like appliances or faucets?

E gads I hope not because I can't find a squirrel or moose faucet anywhere!!! There is also no rule there (if you search you'll see many differing opinions. Here's "my" rule though if it helps: I like to have similar finish tones, either warm or cold if you don't have any pieces that use both. I also think that you should consider if your cabinets themselfs are warm or cold in tone.

I'm using pewter (antiqued) which flows nicely with the stainless countertop and silver water faucets, and looks good with the natural cherry, but unlike many people, I actually have metal accents in the room that are both gold and silver, (warm and cold) so I can go with either. My antique light fixtures have both aluminum silver bodies and gold cups that hold the amber glass, so both tones are present. My range has knobs which are silver, but have gold tips.

In my bathroom I don't have any silver, and the surfaces are all in soft tans to deep browns, including the cabinets which are chocolate cherry. The light fixtures are antique in gold tones, so for the knobs I went with antique gold tone to keep to the cool tone theme. Shiny silver would look out of place in there.

Should the pulls and knobs match?

E gads umm NO :) But that's one of those questions that differs in answers as well. I hvae 26 different knobs in the kitchen...all by the same manufacturer so that the "antique pewter" is always the same color (you'd be amazed the difference from different manufacturers). I'd stick to the same manufacturer for comfortable transitions if you're going to do different knobs and pulls, and frankly even if it's just two styles, I personally like that better than one.

What about sizes anything I should know there?

Heh heh, well the only rule I can give you is that you want to keep scale comfortable. For both astetic and practical reasons you should use a tiny knob in the middle of a huge drawer. Two pulls on a 36" drawer make sense because it allows you to pull evenly across the front of the drawer, not stressing one side or the other. But one large pull works just as well. You just don't want a tiny pull in the middle of a huge drawer...it looks terrible! And with heavy drawers, it won't work worth goober either.

Am I still in overthink mode?

Yes but that's why we're all here so have a glass of wine and relax....it will come to you someday :)

I went with two different sets of them that worked well together. I do have long nails and was worried that the bin pulls woud be a problem but they haven't been at all . . . thankfully! My one bit of advice is to check out any pulls and knobs locally first. I fell in love with several on the internet sites, but in person they were very uncomfortable to use. They either had sharp edges underneath (and these were from very good companies!), were too small, too cramped, too short or stuck out too much IRL. Once I found the "perfect" ones, I ordered them from www.hardwarehut.com and got great deals. I've been very happy with them these past couple months that we've been in our new kitchen.

oh please, I'm in the middle of drawer pull hell right now. I just can't decide anything.

    I'm glad I'm not alone.

I was just in this situation last week and my cabinet guy helped me out by telling me he usually suggests people go with handles/knobs that match with the appliances!!! I never woulda thought of that! So I picked up a bunch (12 or so) from HD and other stores and brought them home to try them on the cabinets. Funny but I ended up with very similar ones to my fridge & stove LOL and I am very happy with my choice : ) Hope that helps some but if not, go with what you like and what feels good when openning (convenience) the drawers/cabinets.

I'm using a mixture, too, including bars to hold towels where convenient. Charming as many designs are, smoothness and simplicity, both for a pleasurable feel for my hands and for ease of cleaning and cleanliness, topped style on my list. Cups are very charming and era-appropriate in some cases, but they can only be grasped from one direction and have to be much harder to keep clean, at least for hands-on cooks like me. You should have them if you love them. I just liked, so passing for me was a no-brainer.

Sometimes its the small things that are the hardest to decide. I went with pulls because they seemed easier and more comfortable to use. My cabinets are a medium maple and I got oil rubbed bronze pulls, very simple. They do blend and I like that.

My faucet is brushed nickle and chrome, my soap dispenser and instant hot water dispenser are both brushed nickel, and my sink is stainless.

I am in the middle of a remodel and this site is great. Thank you to all who post here.
I recently read a decorating tip that suggested matching your knobs to your light fixtures. My fixtures are oil rubbed bronze, so that helped me narrow down my knob choice to oil rubbed bronze. Also at the suggestion of a friend, I am trying to keep accents along the same linear lines. For example I will have a rounded end on my island for seating, so I am trying to keep my lights, knobs, etc round instead of square. It also seems to soften the overall look since the cabinets, of course, have all square edges.

Remember Designing for the Sexes? "He likes modern and she likes traditional.." Well, I think function trumps any other consideration. But it helps if the form is pleasing to the eye.

We both wanted long bar handles (DH because of form; me because I needed places to hang my dishtowel). DH fell for a long curved handle at Expo, which I loved too because it mirrors the curved handles on our fridge and range. The knobs were chosen for their minimalist profile. We think they look fab.

I selected my knobs and pulls today - and the "experienced" cabinet installers were to put them in. Unfortunately, they must have not been thinking and drilled holes very low on the cabinet door...about an inch lower than they should have...in 9 doors and then called it to my attention.

It looked horrible - like the knob was falling off. I called the contracter and all he can do is take all the cabinets back to the shop, try to fill the holes and refinish them OR we are getting all new cabinets. These have only been up for 3 days. I am about to cry!

One hint my contractor did have that made sense...he said to put handles on lower cabinets - those stick out round knobs tend to hit men's pants right where it might hurt...and handles are better. So I did handles on all bottom cabinets and knobs on the top. And I hope this all can get resolved!

I also wanted one pull to a drawer and found that the only pulls I liked, that seemed really well made, were at Restoration Hardware. I have a store local to me and the customer service was fantastic! They were short some of my hardware and called other area stores and had the shortfalls shipped to me for free, which was great b/c online they were backordered for a few weeks!

They also will take anything back as a return - opened or not. Very very customer oriented. The knobs and pulls I got felt great to my hand, but some they sold didn't and I was happy to have been able to touch them before making my decision. Hopefully you will have a local retailer where you can touch what you are considering before deciding. Otherwise, buy one as a sample and check it out before buying them all.

I also found that I can't find an appliance pull to match my style perfectly - sadly RH doesn't seem to do refrigerator pulls. So, I'm still mulling that one over. I did go with all satin nickel, which matches my faucets (well, they're stainless steel, but close enough). I think it's most important that the pulls/knobs match the hinges (ok, yours might not be exposed - mine are).

That's my 2 cents. Have fun! (OH - and be sure to tell your installer that you will have a level out to check the placement of your knobs/pulls on the cabinets! Man, you'd think putting them on level would be a no-brainer!)

I am obsessing about knobs and pulls right now. I discovered today that my preferred cup pulls do not properly fit inside the recessed panel of my cabinet door. So I have to go with longer pulls. I had wanted all knobs on top and pulls on the bottom drawers. Re finish, my appliances are on order and I haven't even started looking at lighting fixtures yet, so I am choosing based on how nice they will look with my warmer cabinet finishes.

....I have become so obsessed over such details....I keep telling myself that in one year these details will not matter....

You guys need to quit complaining. Some of us are still pulling our hair out over stain/glaze/door styles, etc.

I'd love to be worrying about pulls right now. :)

We're putting knobs on top and pulls on the bottom w/the possible exception of the 6" filler pullouts (the pulls are 96mm and too long for the "door" portion). Additionally, we're putting two pulls on the drawers wider than 27 or 30 inches (I'm waiting to see how I like them)...all for form, in this case. I've heard everyone say that even w/two handles drawer glides today seem to be able to handle ;-) being opened w/one hand.

Not being a guy, I didn't know about that problem. However, I do know that clothing gets caught on knobs and sometimes rips, especially pockets! So we decided to do all pulls on the lowers. (Not sure what to do about those 6"-ers though)

We're getting the "birdcage" pulls & knobs in antique iron even though our lights & faucet are satin nickel. They're actually from 2 different manufacturers...the pulls from Siro and the knobs from Dec Har. Both are from EXPO. As with Smarge, we found that the Siro knobs didn't fit quite right (too short) but the pulls looked much nicer than the Dec Har (the knobs looked the same). I also recommend going somewhere to try out the knobs & pulls. Then go find them online cheaper! :-D

What I'd really like, is to find those "manhandles" by Sóko for a lot less than $210 each (for the smallest ones)!!!

In San Francisco there is a whimsical & fun store called Bauerware which only sells pulls & knobs.

They have a website too. But the store has a much larger selection. It's really worth going to if you live in the bay area.

Their categories include: contemporary, vintage, traditional, children's, & gamepieces. They also make custom knobs out of practically anything.
