'Star' system wall support info?

I'm gutting an old Baltimore rowhouse. It's and end unit and I'm concerned with the outside wall bowing out. This is not uncommon and the solution is a threaded rod spanning the entire house, anchored to the inner (shared) wall and through the outer wall. A decorative end (usually a star) screws onto the rod and keeps that area of the brick wall from pulling away.

I'm familiar in theory, but can't find any practical info on this system anywhere. Any info on sizing, spacing, anchoring, and code issues would be appreciated.
