Yes, but let the lights be the focal point in the kitchen.

They are too big. Together they measure 52", leaving us 34" of space to play with. I think you should have them at least 12" in from each end of the island. and that leaves only 10" between the two fixtures. In reality, your electrical connections have probably already been installed and you should measure between the two connections (center to center measurements) to determine approximate size of fixtures needed.

Maybe you already have measured the connections. If so, please tell us what they are. Also, what is the width of your island?

3D has a pretty convincing illustration there, and I'll concede that they would fit there. However, I'd prefer slightly smaller ones.

Carolyn, I am building a small house and my island will be five feet long and two feet wide, not including the overhang which is approx 12 inches, I wanted to put one drum shade over this, I have bought the pendant which hold 3 60 watt bulbs. I was thinking of 18 inches wide and 8 inches high. I have time to decided if I want one, two or three pendants as the house is not far enough along yet the final wiring has not been done. Please help. I have been following you and trust you.

Here is your 60" island with one 18" drum shade that is 8" high. I'll let Carolyn comment on what she thinks :)

momo, thank you for the lovely compliment! If the fixture is hung centered over the portion of your island that is 5' x 2', then an 18" fixture is likely to be something that a tall person could hit their head on...probably more damaging to the fixture than to the basketball player.

I hope your bar overhang is the same height as the rest of the island. If not, I'd advise you to change it so that it IS the same 36" height. So if your island, with overhang is 36" wide and the fixture is hung centered on that 36 inches, then the 18" fixture could work. Or you could use two fixtures, slightly smaller than 18" each. Perhaps 14" fixtures. Anyway, you can go for one, or two smaller. I would not do the 3 very small pendant lights as their popularity is dimming.

Thank You so much 3D and Carolyn, the island is all the same 36 inch height. I must admit I read all your advice and really am following it.

I would not hang the pendant at 8' high, but considerably lower, at 6' or 6.5'. The height measurement would be to the bottom of the shade.

I have a similar question: We are putting in an 84-inch island and I'd like to use drum shades over it, for some color and pattern. We have a vaulted ceiling that goes to 12' in this room (over the island, it probably goes from 8'-6" on one end to 10' on the other), and no upper cabinets. What size of drum shades would you recommend using, and how many? Thank you!

I also have a similar question; I am buying a drum pendant fixture, and cannot decide on the height of the shade. This will be going over a counter height (36'') breakfast table measuring 35'' x 48''. The table has 24'' stools. My ceiling is 94'', and I am trying to decide between a shade that is 7'' tall and a shade that is 11'' tall. Both are 18'' in diameter. Any suggestions on which shade is better, or how low to hang the fixture? Thanks!

Slooper, because of your low ceiling height, I would select the 7" tall fixture and hang it 30" above the countertop.

I would not go any larger than 18" diameter which leaves you with 8.5" of space on either side. We don't want tall people hitting their head of the shade as they lean over the island.
