F&B fo Cabinets

Hello ... I am *thinking* of painting my kitchen cabinets (Oak) a creamy white. It seems all of the colors I really like are F&B.

I have followed posts on this forum about painting cabinets and see BM Aura or one of their other paints recommended (also Cabinet Coat).

But I am very picky on colors!! So, is F&B a good, mediocor or great paint for cabinets (it sure is pricey!!).

Any feedback is much appreciated!!!

You can have a custom color made. BM, among others, will match a swatch and may even have the other manufacturer's exact color formula. So, you can have the F&B color, but BM paint.
I have painted many cabinets over the years, and ultimately I prefer BM. I have heard great things about Cabinet Coat, but have yet to try.
Here's a trick that I keep throwing out there: use Porch and Floor paint. It is epoxy based, so once cured, it is extremely durable (good enough for floors, right?). It goes on very smoothly with little or no brushstrokes. If you use a sprayer, it goes on like a charm. It's great for oak since it is self-leveling and will fill in some of the holes that are hard to spackle. And, it can be custom mixed.
I have used both HD and BM floor paint and have had excellent results with both. And finally, if you want to get creative and glaze your cabinets, the surface is perfectly smooth!
But, no matter which way you go, your prep work is very important. Make sure to fill any holes, prime and sand before you start your finish coats. Good Luck!!

If you're picky about color, I can just about guarantee you that you're never going to get what you consider a *match* to any Farrow & Ball paint color.

If you want a Farrow & Ball color, you should simply make the investment and move on.

: use Porch and Floor paint.

Good luck trying to get any warranty to hold up by using a product that is not labeled for that use

Funcolors ... It's not the extra $$$$ with the F&B, I just want to know if it's a GOOD CHOICE FOR CABINETS(will it hold up as good as the Aura paint).

I have used F&B for one room in my house and love their color choices ... and the fact they don't have thousands of colors actually helps me some!! LOL

Anyway, I just received my sample pots yesterday and so hoping this is the way to go.

Paintergirl94 .... I *think* I would be a little leery of porch & floor paint; especially since BM makes so many other paints suitable for cabinets. But thanks for your input!!

I realize that it was a stretch to offer advise outside the box, but I have painted hundreds of surfaces and found porch and floor paint very easy to use for cabinets -- eliminates brushstrokes, etc.
As far as a warranty, that will only cover the cost of the paint anyway, and the paint is suitable for WOOD SURFACES.
    Enough said.

Paintergirl94 .... I am going to keep the porch/floor paint in mind for a few other projects I have and see how it works for them.

My first up project is a small pantry off the kitchen and there are several F&B *whites *creams and *light yellows that would be perfect for this area. Their colors are just so unique (I think) .... and I like the fact they only have *X* amount of colors ... makes it easier for me :)

Yes, color evokes such emotional reactions...if you are happy with F&B colors then you are smart to use them. I was also so happy to see that you will keep an open mind. There is certainly a right way to do things, but not always one way. I like to approach each project with a sense of adventure, taking all details into consideration. So again, even if you never use my suggestion, thanks for the kind words!!

Paintergirl that porch & floor paint sounds interesting. But should it be used on bare wood?
I am just about to paint some cabinets, but I have already committed to F&B eggshell water base. Do you think the porch & floor paint would be a good undercoat or is that not how if works? The cabinets have a sort of shiny finish on them now.
    All suggestions are welcome.

I'm not such a fan of Aura on cabinets - or furniture - at this point. I've done both. I'm not overly impressed. Painting cabinets with Aura needs an extender added -- it's a helpful step for DIY or pro.

The result? I'm just kinda "meh". There are so many other products that cost less than Aura and work just as well. Unless it's a dark or super dark color, then Aura is a really good choice.

But the whites, off-whites, creamier colors - there are better options than Aura. For instance, go big with Fine Paints of Europe and Farrow and Ball for the uber luxe look and colors. Or go perfectly affordable, easy to apply, looks great, long-lasting finish with Cabinet Coat.

Aura doesn't knock my socks off in this specific category.

I believe that BenM porch product is for use interior AND exterior - wouldn't say that's not a viable option to explore.

    NO, that will NOT work
You need a slow dry oil under body primer for bare wood.

funcolors .... thanks for your imput. I used Aura for some doors/wood trim in my bedroom redo and it was fine (white is white in that room). However, I'm finding I don't care for their colors. I am just so *in love* with the F&B colors, LOL!!!

And I just wanted assurance that F&B is a really GOOD choice for cabinets!!! (And my front door too!!)

    Thanks!!!

Deirdres, always prep your surfaces properly. Primer is the best choice for bare wood, whether it be oil or latex, interior or exterior.
F&B is terrific paint, but eggshell is really for walls. You should use a trim or cabinet paint. You can use eggshell, but you will need a finish coat of some sort. Which is not a problem, just adds another step.
And finally, you mentioned that your cabinets have a shiny finish on them now. If it was previously painted w/oil or has some sort of varnish, you cannot paint over w/latex. Your will need to sand and prime. Prep is really key to a good finish!

Well actually... as is the norm for the uber brands of paint, a Farrow & Ball eggshell is not the same as other brands of a lesser price-point.

Crown Point Cabinetry uses Farrow and Ball's line of "Eco-Friendly" Estate Eggshell for all their custom cabinetry.

funcolors .... THANK YOU!!!!! That's ALL the reassurance I need! And you know, I have been to their website and have never seen *that* particular page.

First off I am redoing a small pantry area (previously painted) .... I have ordered about 7 samples of neutrals and now have to decide on the perfect one :))) Just so excited!!!

It's on Crown Point's website, not F&B's. Crown Point just has a link back to F&B for more detailed info on why they choose to do their cabinets in F&B egg.

So, no wonder you didn't see it. :-)

I have kitchen cabinets painted with F&B eggshell. It's excellent cabinet paint and is wearing very well 9 months later. It's also adjacent to Estate and Modern emulsions on the walls in the same room.

All my trim is also done in F&B satin.

One reason to use it is the surface quality, which is a bit satin-y without any sheen.

I would not try to color match F&B. Been there and it doesn't work. Most commercial paint brands use 4-5 colorants. F&B has up to 16 which gives their colors more complexity and depth. It's high quality, high performance paint and well worth the money IMO. Not everyone wants to spend on paint or has an instinct for those colors.
