Guest bedroom help needed.

I want to paint and get new bedding for our guest bedroom. The lovely colors were selected by the previous owners' little boys and it shows. The furniture is also theirs. We have Ikea Hemnes furniture in the antique finish (no longer made, but similar to the current Levsik color http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/22206_PE088063_S3.jpg) and a metal headboard in a pewter color. I would consider a new bed, but not new furniture.

I feel somewhat constrained by the warm maple woodwork but won't consider painting over it. I don't know what paint colors and/or bedding to choose. I could really use some inspiration! Eventually this will be a children's room so I'd love a wall color that could transition to that, but am willing to repaint if need be. There are 4 windows across one wall (only 2 shown in the second picture). There are identical white closet doors and maple dressers on opposite sides of the room as seen in the second picture.

So basically - bring on the paint, bedding, window treatments, rugs - whatever! I'd love any advice I can get. Oh our master is blue, so I'd like something different. Our nursery-to-be will likely be a unisex color, maybe yellow?

I kinda like the green without a blue ceiling. Before I repainted everything I would try the ceiling in a cream color to match the doors.

I think yellow would look really good in that room. I would however make sure that it is a strong yellow so that it won't look washed out. Beautiful trim! I wouldn't paint over that woodwork either and I hate unpainted woodwork.

I agree that a rich yellow would look good. How about Ellen Kennon's mustard? We have that in our master with similar woodwork and floors. Here's a photo.

My 1st suggestion was going to be blue until I read you wanted something besides that. I agree the yellow would look good or you could go with a different shade of green, maybe more of a sage. You should check out the "greens" and "gold/yellows" on the gallery.
. judydel - Sorry to be off topic, but is your dresser an antique? If it's newer, can you tell me who makes it?

Jordon do you realize that we fry spammers for breakfast??

Laurie it is not an antique. It was made by Lexington . . . I bought it approx. 15 years ago.

Thanks for the input so far! Yellow would be pretty. I was thinking of that for our nursery (same color trim so same problems!). I would love some color suggestions in yellows or greens. If it's too cool, the woodwork looks orange, so I think something warmer would be better, right? I was also thinking cream or taupe but that might be too boring and monochromatic looking.

I'll have to look for the gallery. I'm a kitchen forum person so I'm not too familiar with the rest of the boards.

I love white woodwork, but this is a 1910 Craftsman and the woodwork is a mix of new and old and I feel like it would be a crime against nature to paint over that maple. White woodwork gives more flexibility with colors though. *sigh*

Bedding has been hard to find too.

I have two yellows that are not screaming meemie that I love!
One is SW Jersey Cream. (Posted in Gallery "Yellows" thread during painting/remodel process. To get to the Gallery just look at the options at top of page, right before posts start. You'll see Decorating, Gallery, Conversations. ) The other is an Ace color, Manor Cream. (I had the JC mixed by Ben Moore, but the Ace color I just used Ace paint.) Soothing, not jarring, calming. In a high light room the Jersey Cream might be too light for you, I used it in a lower light family room and it's perfect, it has mellowed to a buttery creamy golden. The Manor Cream I put in higher light bedrooms in a different house, and I can't get enough of that color when I'm there! (Sorry, no pics of that one) Despite the name, both are more yellow than cream for sure. In fact when searching yellows, I found a huge chunk of the agony is taken away if you shift your focus over to swatches of creams that have high yellow tint in them. "True" yellows (just like taupes/beiges) have the propensity to drive you crazy! And almost all were too jarring for my taste.

Also, trailrunner has a yellow I had my eye on for ages but never used. After seeing it on her laundry room walls I regret not using it! Valspar (pretty sure it's Valspar line at Lowe's) Belgian Waffle. If you post and ask her for it, she'd probably oblige. She re-posted it for me once but the thread is gone (lost in one of the board software glitches we've had lately?).

Here's the "greens" post from the gallery. I love EK Edgewood Green.

I also love Brutuses Nantuckey Gray
