Pictures are dark so it is hard to see. Looks like you are almost finished. Do you like color? Add a colorful area rug. Look on Capel.com, Target.com and get some colorful throw cushions. You can look for them on Etsy.com. Just input what your are looking for in their search engine.

Hang the pics in the dining area and bring in a larger horizontal mirror over the couch to reflect more daylight.

I agree about having a mirror, but over the sofa would reflect the bookshelves and TV---not really what you want to see double of. The dining wall is opposite the window and would be more ideal. Really... :)

I absolutely agree. That was my first thought, but I wasn’t sure if the dining area could carry it.

I LOVE Natalie's suggestion about the mirror (and the size) behind your dining table. Think it would look great framed in the metallics you mentioned. Your "small" watercolors would be too small there. Do use then on the bookcases or in a smaller area-maybe on one of those narrow walls we all have--hung vertically.

Yes the pictures over the couch need to come down. The rule I've heard is 7-9" above the back of the sofa.

It looks like your lamps are blue so maybe look for several patterns you love in that shade as throw pillows. I'd choose several textures. You could pull in the bronze/gold tones into the pillows also. Just be careful to balance you colors around the room. (Natalies's rug in light blue??) Don't have all the color in just one area or one side of your room. Carry it over into the bookcase and maybe as a vase or runner on your dining table. (I liked a tip I've seen about turning the books so the pages show-not the spines to cut down on the mish mash of colors. Or removing dust covers. Oh, detail, details!)

Io think you need some pattern but I like your "for the most part" monochromatic color scheme. But then, I'm not a pop of color kind of person unless it's some type of art.

I'd like to see how it would look if you moved the lamp & table that is between the two chairs to the right--near the bookcases. Remove the little piece that is next to the bookcases now. Right now it looks a bit crowded.

It's not going to take much for you to make this a fantastic room and hope you let us see what you do. We're all voyeurs here!

Also, I have this area/entry hall way type space that the sofa looks out onto. I was hoping to get a buffet or something that I can use for storage (gloves/scarves/random stuff) and decorate with lamps and fun but functional things. I want to hang a big mirror over that space too and get a rug that will coordinate with the living room.

I like the previous suggestion of a mirror opposite the windows (maybe a sunburst: https://www.houzz.com/photos/sunburst-mirror-ideas-phbr0lbl-bl~l_142979). Also consider cleaning up some of the knick-knacks from the table and adding a floor lamp for more light.

1) For the pillows you could go with any of a whole range of colors based on your other furniture and decor, though I like the idea of bringing in a metallic gold color.

2) For the bookshelves: have a mix of full bookshelves with ones empty except fora single art object, and then in some others, you could have the books artfully stacked with other books leaning against them diagonally. Maybe get some artsy bookends to add some interest. Painting behind the bookshelves (if your landlord's ok with it) could also add more contrast.

3) A colored rug could brighten up the space too, though honestly I think what would help most is more light!

Yes, the pictures feel to high--also a little small--it would be better if you had three (could place them in a triptych) or a single larger piece.

The photos are dark, but there's quite a lot of light in this room. Not perfectly balanced, admittedly. I LOVE the idea of a starburst mirror above the dining table. And bookends!! I can paint behind the bookshelves (they are mine and not built-ins... in fact from IKEA, I just changed the drawer pulls). I also think you are right about the pictures being too small. I think I'll move them to a different wall. (Right now thinking about the one where the small bookshelf is in the entryway pic I just posted... am planning on getting a bar cart there and so it would be low and I would hang both photos vertically there).

You could also get an inexpensive rug to hang (hem one end and put a curtain rod through it) in the hall as a wall hanging on the big empty entry wall. Easy way to add dimension and texture.

Another way to add interest to the bookshelves is to put little lights on them. You could use the candle type with light sensors and a add little shade. They sell them at Michael’s at Xmas for just a few dollars. The bulb lasts for years and you always have a little night light, never enter when dark. Just a few, maybe 3. You might have to drill a hole to drop the cord through it, though. Just place them in front of a few books. Or, you could use the battery lit tea lights. Adds a lot of atmosphere. And they don’t all have to be the same. (I have one on top of a tall hutch in the kitchen, with a few baskets-never dark in the middle of the night, but soft enough not to be in your face.)

You could hang the two pictures over the shelving piece in the hall, vertically stacked, but not too high, if they are not too large. The wall looks to be a good shape for them, and then you can leave it at 2.

I viewed the pictures of pillows you posted. I like the blue and white pillows you showed - 2nd and 3rd link you posted. But, with the dark pictures, I honestly could not tell how well they went with your furnishings - such as the lamps since they appear to be light blue? And I cannot tell what color your art is. Perhaps you could take a picture closer to the couch too.

If you do remove some of the books, consider getting a colorful vase or two for an accent on one of the upper shelves. If you want some really nice ones and you might consider blue if you are doing blue pillows, I would go to Blenko.com they make hand blown glass and have been around for decades. They may be one of the only hand blown glass makers in the US b/c so many have gone out of business. Might be something you will want to keep as an heirloom. I have a vase from the 70's from there. Or buy more for Christmas presents!

I think your place looks really soft and pretty but I would hang the pictures above the couch lower, or stack them above eachother over your side table and find a really nice big piece of art or even frame a beautiful fabric over your sofa. If you could find a vintage window that would also look cool hung in your space. I would hang a mirror above your dining table and just place one big bowl (or candle, etc) on the dining table to make a statement. I would color block your books on similar shelves and place your other treasures on display on some shelves too. I like the idea of introducing soft blues, it will be so serene! Have fun!
