does it make any difference?

My neighbor's 18 year old Pomeranian recently passed away and they kindly gave me several some small cans of SD (gourmet beef) senior dog food. The 'best by date' is 11/08. I have given my year old Havanese a very small amount for the past 2 days and he just loves it! But now I'm wondering if this is the right thing to do? Do any of you know if for whatever reason that this is not a very good idea? and for what reason? Thanks Wendy

I'm confused. Why are you asking if it's the right thing to do? It doesn't expire until almost a YEAR from now! What's the issue??

gabro 14, the issue here is that the can states for 'mature adults guess I should have added that the can also says's for 'senior 7+' and my dog is just a year old and I don't want to give him any unforeseen problems that you knowledgble people here may know about that I'm not aware of. Guess I could call my vet. Wendy

Oh, I missed the fact that your dog is a pup, sorry. No, I don't think you should be giving a 1-year-old *growing* dog senior dog food. There are different ingredients in senior dog food, and your pup needs all the protein and other "growing ingredients" it can get. Seniors have different needs when it comes to food. If your pup likes it, then get him the same food, but not in Senior form. I don't see any harm in finishing the cans, but definitely don't keep him on this food long term.

Gabi, he also eat a 1/2 -3/4 a cup of small 'Innova EVO' kibble a day which includes chicken, veg etc. depending on how hungry he is... Havanese are picky eaters so it's good to see him really chow down on this canned. I think I will get him some of the same canned food meant for pups, as you suggest and switch of here and there until the senior stuff is done. Or, possible find an appreciative senior dog to re-gift, lol. Thanks again for your replies. Wendy

I didn't mean that he should be on puppy food (I'm not sure how long pups should be on puppy food for...you can look on the label)....I just meant he shouldn't be on Senior food. But again, I don't see harm in finishing what you have. It's a good thing you found a food he likes!

    Take care,

If you only have several small cans and are adding to his regular food as a topper, I don't see any issues. Its not like he is going to be on this long term and even if he ate this as his only food for a couple of days its not going to hurt him. I wouldn't give a puppy senior dog food long term, but as a bit here and there over a week isn't a problem.

Elephantear, the only issue I could forsee is that some senior foods are lower in calories, so your youngster might need more dry. At 1yr, he is still growing. but as a previous poster said, if you are just using it as a mix in with his regular kibble, it's probably totally harmless.

You might also consider donating the senior food to a shelter or rescue group. That's what I did when I lost my senior dog last year.

as a topper no it's not a problem. Just so you know different senior foods have very different important ratios than their puppy and or adult lines and in a growing dog could actually be quite harmful even over a few weeks if it were the only diet given.

Thank you for all replies. As I only give him a small amount at a time the food in question could last a long time. I have a daughter in another town with an older Border Collie that I can give these cans to. From now on only puppy food for Toby! Thanks again, Wendy
