Need Help Picking Island Light

I apologize if the pics are huge. I tried resizing but photobucket is acting weird?

I'd like to get a new light for above the island.

Island is 6' x 3'.

The kitchen and DR area are open to each there. Here's some pics.

I would imagine the new light would need to coordinate with the existing one above the table.

I received a gift card from Lowes and I'd like to purchase one from there. Needs to be $200 or less.

Here are some contenders. I'm thinking some of these may be too small to have for a center light. At this point I think it needs to stay a center light.

I'm open to other suggestions of lights from Lowes.

I lean toward traditional, old worlde, tuscan, .... I like french country... ha, I like a lot of stuff!

I'm plan on somehow sprucing up my island, and I'm having stool cushions made out of matching fabric from the valance.

TIA

These are the three I like best. (there are others I like). Will any of these work?

#1 length 17", width 16"

{{!gwi}}

#2 length 36.5" width 19" height 15" I normally think this type of light looks like it should be over a pool table, just my opinion. But I like this one.

#3 length 26.5", width 17"

    I like them all.

I'd eliminate #1 because I don't think it fits the space.

Love #3 but it might compete with your lighting over the table, so that leaves #2 which will read island, not pool table, when placed in its context.

Hmm.. I was thinking the scroll things would coordinate. I could see compete now that you said it. After I posted I also wondered if it looked too much like a foyer shaped light.
I really like 1 but had my doubts it would look right there.
Like I said I'm open to other suggestions from Lowes!

I wished I would've picked a different light for over the table but all of a sudden when building we discovered they weren't supplying the lights and we needed to get something up fast. Went shopping and came back with one! Oh well.

I have seen the #2 fixture at Lowes and think it would look wonderful over your island. And if it helps any, it's the exact one I had in my head before I scrolled down to your choices :) It's a beautiful light.
I posted over at the kitchen forum for the first time yesterday for opinions on lights...it can be frustrating with all the choices out there.

I agree with Parma, #1 just doesn't seem to fit the space and #3 would really compete with your chandy over your table. So of the three that you have posted, I would chose #2.

Have you thought about placing 2-3 mini pendants over your island? We have a very similar chandy in our DR and then one that is much larger but basically the same design in our two-story foyer. These are the pendants that we have over our island. We have 3 and our island is about 8' long.

optional - DH likes #2. There were others I liked on online but when I saw them in the store they looked really different (cheapy).

scarlet - I have thought of two lights over the island. I like the idea of two small chandys. At this point though we're working on larger projects (finishing basement and landscaping) and the center light doesn't bother me enough to pay to have someone make the change at this point.

shee: When I was in the market for lighting, I liked a lot of stuff by Quoizel. Seems to me the style in this space is transitional so may want to use that as a search criteria. I'd keep looking if I were you. I think you can do better. I like the idea of the pendants, but you'd have to have wiring done--not sure you want to go that route.

I agree with you about the lighting choices at Lowes recently. I used to be able to go in there and come out with something perfect. I don't know if my tastes have changed or it's their lighting buyer, but I can't find anything in there lately. I do really like the one you picked and if DH likes it...all the better!

The only other thing i would suggest is that some of the Lowes have a section of lighting that's adaptable to different situations...they have a bar fixture, for instance, that has a single point to connect to your electrical box but has multiple hanging points. It wouldn't give you the two small chandeliers, but they have many different glass shades that hang down from a rod or cord. Not sure if that would be too contemporary for you, but some pretty glass might be nice too. If you do a search on the Lowes site for "pendant fitter" you'll see what i'm trying to explain ;)
I know this is a single fixture, it fit into the existing can light, but this is one of the glass shades.

Hi Shee! I am in the process right now of remodeling our basement. New carpet, flooring and lighting. I too have lights like yours that need updating. Someone suggested replacing the one flushmount with a track style light that pendants can hang from, much like optionalnecessity has shown. I would never had thought of that on my own. Spots can also be on the same track for additional lighting. Another idea would be a lighted potrack!

I can't wait to see what you pick!

Just a thought, but have you considered moving the dining chandy to over the island and picking out something new for the dining area?

I'm just mentioning that becasue your dining chandy would look perfect over the island. Plus it would give you a chance (gift cards WHOO HOO!) to do something neat over your table.

#2 is exactly what I had pictured in my mind that would be lovely over the island before I even saw the photo. You want down light in that area, anyway, and the scroll pattern on that fixture blends nicely with your chandy over the table. I think #2 would be ideal.

Val - I like a lot of the lighting at that site. There are two places near my work that sell that brand (did a search on their page). I'm sure the ones I liked were a lot of $. I tend to be drawn to the most expensive things but my budget doesn't always allow it. That's normal though right?

Optional - Yeah the one I originally thought I liked I saw in the store and it was all bent and just really bad looking. I never thought of the pendant fitter thing. I just looked it up but I think it is a little too contemporary for me.

Kmcg - I saw some nice pot rack looking lights (don't remember if they were from Lowes) but wondered if you have to hang pots from them?... I wouldn't so I crossed those off the list. I'm excited to start working on the basement but I'd rather buy other stuff honestly. We also need to buy a lawn mower....yay. Seriously, how fun is that.

Paint chips - Didn't think of doing that. I'm trying to visualize. I'll admit DH had another idea of what to use the gift card for. It was boring and I really want a new light so I've been pushing to use it for the island. :)

Nanny - At this point I'm leaning toward #2 but will have to maul all this over!

I like stuff like this. But I honestly can't even picture it looking right over my table with the other stuff that in the room.

I have a similar style as your #2 over my island and I like it alot. It feels like it fits an island.

Getting a bit off topic.. I really don't like how any evening pics are looking yellow. Do I need to change the bulbs? Even the top of my table is reading more yellow.

Downey - Out of my choices above style #2 would probably look the most proportioned too.

How far above the island should your light go? 30"?

I had a feeling it might be, but i thought i'd throw it into the mix ;) I know what you mean about seeing things in person and not quite looking as you thought. I'm about to order lights sight unseen online. I've done pretty good with my choices so far, but it still makes me nervous every time. Go with the #2...you can always return it if you don't like it :)

As far as the yellow cast to your pics...if the light looks ok to you in the house, i wouldn't worry what it looks like in pics...things always look off, especially at night. I have daylight CFL's in my dining room, pure white light, no yellow and it always looks weird to me. Kinda un-natural.

Optional - Back when we bought the light we somehow ended up with two differnt types of bulbs. There were the ones that are in there now and another type that almost looked blueish to me. I thought these looked better in the actual light. Cast more of a warm glow. The ones in there are GE CFL's but I don't remember what type.

correction I think they are bright effects.

yes, mine are bright effects too. I have a 9 light chandelier in there and there is a definite blueish cast. There just doesn't seem to be a happy medium with the CFL's...as long as they don't make my red dining room look purple I guess I can live with it! ha! ;)
