kitten proofing our apt

Our apt is being checked out for kitten adoption. We will get to choose 2 from either 3 or 4 kittens but they are all 8 weeks old (as of yesterday). What all should we do to "kitten proof"? I don't remember as it has been so long since we had a kitten. All the cords are out of the way (or things that are unplugged regularly), our bathroom vanity has only towels and clothes (the vanity has no doors, we have plugged any place the kittens could get stuck, have food, litter, etc. What else? I am not worried about our "inspection" but the kittens getting into trouble. Should I have a large box to keep them safe while we are out in the beginning? Baby gates?
