cat is devastated!!

I got the most incredible cat at the pound.

A seal-point wedge head Siamese!!! He has a deformed ear but that just makes him more beautiful!!

I've had him for ten days and he is absolutely devastated. I have been able to get him to eat small amounts of tuna but he is hiding big time! I'm sure this is his first move since kittenhood. Well, his first move would have been from his home to the pound and then the pound to my home. Poor puddy tat.

I found him in a small drawer earlier today and now i put him in a suitcase for the night - open of course. He wants to be in the dark. He's been hiding out in my cat-safe outdoor enclosure but he has acquired a cold from that i think, so i'm going to keep him in the house for a few days.

Cats are so different from dogs in this way.

Congrats on adopting a cat from the shelter!

If you haven't already, I'd suggest you have him vet checked, especially since he's now showing signs of a cold. Animals pick up all sorts of bacteria & viruses while at a shelter and with the added stress you wouldn't want him to get 'really' sick.

Keep in mind that he may not have come from a home, but from the street. Poor guy........I'm sure he's scared with all the changes he's been thru.

yeh, he's stressed - that's for sure - he has the most plaintive cry - classically siamese.

but i know he came from a home because the owner filled out information about him - his age and temperament and why he was being turned in. death of owner was the reason/probably his wife - lol!

some antibiotics would probably be very helpful but feeding them to a fearful cat is difficult. And taking him to a vet itself would also be very stressful - kind of a Catch 22 situation. been there/done that. but maybe i'll give him some penicillin injections. (i know i'll get a reaction from the forum on that!! - LOL)

Give him two weeks and he'll come out of his shell.

I'm a dog person also. I have two cats I rescued last year. I left them in a bedroom with the door closed for two weeks. I went in ocassionaly to talk to them and I left toys. Then I opened the door and after some time they started venturing out.

They use the same room however for there sleeping quarters.

Definitely get a him check up at the Vet's. Cats pick up respritory illnesses at the pound. It's very contageous.

    Hugs to your new kitty.

I would second the rec to take him to a vet. I volunteer at a shelter, and URI's can spread like wildfire. Usually they'll give Clavamox for an URI, but best to let the vet do an exam, and decide the best course of treatment so it doesn't become worse.

    Congrats on your new buddy!

The cat would not get a cold from being outside, but from being around another cat with the same virus. For the most part, if the cat is healthy in other ways, no vet visit nor antibiotics are necessary, unless there is thick discharge from the nose and eyes. Like any cold, it will run its course.

As far as his stress: consider confining him to one room (like your bedroom) during the day, so he is not overwhelmed?

I'd love to see a picture!
