first imperfection

we are still not in and i'm over it. just don't care anymore.

anyway, i do on occasion use the kitchen. i made a couple of loaves of banana bread today since i had lots of overly ripe bananas lying around. when i had them in the oven i moved my KA stainless mixing bowl over to the sink to soak a while.

and when i lifted it out of the sink to stick it in the dishwasher i noticed a couple of black scratches in my terribly-expensive-but-had-to-have farmhouse sink.

and i didn't wince or gasp. i didn't give it a thought, except to acknowledge how genuinely pleased i was with myself. it's a kitchen for G-d's sake! it's a utilitarian space and they are built for work.

i also dropped part of the lid of my food processor on my walnut floors. i picked it up and put it in the dishwasher without giving the floor so much as a look.

so what do you think? i'm doing pretty good, yes?

Definitely, yes--you're doing great! Consider the kitchen christened!!! How many more rooms to go? ;-)

    Attagirl!

Kitchen n. Room you cook in.

Utilitarian? Are you even allowed to say that here? Perish the thought. Be honest did that banana bread really taste as good as the last batch from when the kitchen was blemish free? I'm sure there was a piece on America's Test Kitchen about how sink sratches diminish the flavour of banana bread - it's science.

I salute you for broaching the issue - your doing great.

Harrumph, well that would be the last time I'd ever make banana bread.

    Denial is good.

    You're doing great.

    You should be proud!

We spend a fortune to have our blue jeans artfully distressed so they look aged when new, and then freak out when our kitchens, which we genuinely use to nourish our families, begin to register the first signs of that use.

    Yes you're doing great.

    Think: wabu sabi.

Oh, thanks for the laugh ladies. "That would be the last time I made banana bread." That was good. LOL!!!

I remember the first scratch in my hard wood floors. I almost cried. A year later and there are plenty of scratches that I don't give a second thought to....yes denial is good.

I think I'd have a heart attack with marble counter tops. We'd have to do the prep work in the laundry room. :-)

Well I'll just say it - that stinks! It took we a little longer to get to the "whatever, just another scratch" stage. I had the wood floors refinished last spring. Before the guy had even stained, a soapstone sample came down and dinged the floor. Then the stupid dw leaked under the wood. It buckled a little. Then a cab door sample fell on floor, another scratch. Funny, when the floor was new, 15 yrs ago, I wasn't nearly as weird about it. Oh well, "whatever, just another scratch" !

    And neither does kateskourous!!!!

gotta run, giant sweaty men on the way.......

    Yeah.
The only almost finished thing in my house are my gorgeous hard wood floors.

They remain gorgeous under all the drywall dust and cat fur because I invest in wood filler and Old English scratch cover.

    Yeah.
    You're doing fine.
    Bananas, huh?

You *are* doing great! Just remember that the things in your kitchen are merely that, "things". "Things" can be fixed and they can be replaced (although I know you don't want to think about the latter right now, LOL).

I just chuckled about this! My Facebook status today is actually "Today I will be 'The Heather Badger'"

i did glance at the scratch again this morning, and it's still fine.
but i think i'll invest in that sink grid after all.

Yes, you can use the word "utilitarian" here, but only followed by the word "look".

You have hit on my problem with patina. I love patina but the awkward teenage years leading up to it are painful. You are holding up well.

    "awkward teenage years" ...exactly!

If the black marks begin to bother you, which I doubt they will:), I have used peroxide to remove pot marks from my old farmhouse sink. The marks might not be scratches but just a discoloration from the metal rubbing on the bottom of the sink. But if they are scratches I respect your attitude greatly!
