Question about Frontline Plus.

A few weeks ago I noticed Henry scratching his neck, so I combed him and found a flea. I ordered Frontline right away and dosed them two weeks ago..each cat. And I am still finding live fleas when I comb them. Never had one jump on me , but shouldn't they all be dead by now? I can't figure how they got them since no one ever goes outside except the humans. I'm ordering another round to put on them all in two more weeks. I think I read about the fleas building up a resistance to the Frontline which is what I've always used when needed. Should I go with Advantage this time?

At any given time about 90% of your flea population is not on the pet. As the fleas get on the animal to feed then the frontline should kill them. I would asume that if you are only finding a couple fleas then it is working, the fleas have to get on the pet in order for the frontline to work. If you are finding more than a couple then it's either not working or you have a much larger problem than you thought.
You can get carpet treatments and I think I would go ahead and treat with that just to be on the safe side. I would also treat my yard. Even tho the kitty's don't go out you are bringing them in on your feet when you do.

I just combed them all and found fleas on all of them. I checked the calendar and I put the Frontline on August 4th. I ordered the Frontline online, and hope it was the real stuff.. It wasn't Petmeds but a similar company. Today I'm going to shop vac the house. I really have never seen any fleas except on the cats, and I walk around with white socks on. I think you need to wait a month to reapply, don't you? I threw away the instructions.

Frontline plus is good for 90 days preventively. But if you have an infestation, yes you would use it every month. Personally, I would vacuum like crazy every day for a week, (use the regular vacuum and dispose of the bag every day). Let the Frontline application do it's job before thinking about reapplying. Even though you haven't seen any in the house, they are there and will continue to breed if they can find a host. Keep flea combing the cats and clean the comb with soapy water after each stroke. With the pack you have you're not going to get much else done!

You will find live fleas for at least 4 months. That is how long the eggs that were already in the environment will take to hatch and become adult fleas. Using Frontline Plus will break the cycle of fleas reproducing as well as kill adult fleas. It can take up to 24 hours for fleas on your pets to die. But you will have a continuous new influx of fleas for the next 4 months, because as Laurie mentioned, only 10% of the fleas you have are adults that you can see. The rest are various larval and egg stages just waiting to hatch and emerge. You can either just wait it out (not recommended since your cat is uncomfortable), or treat the house using a product that kills both adult and larval stages. If you choose to treat the house, you will have to follow the directions perfectly and treat the entire house at the same time. It is possible that the company ripped you off and gave you an inferior product. It is also possible that the fleas are resistant. But it is most likely that you are seeing the hatching and emerging of fleas that were already in your home.

I don't think Frontline Plus prevents fleas for 90 days.
The ONE time I went longer than 35 days, and went to about 45 days, my dogs developed fleas. Since then, they get Frontline Plus every thirty days, even in winter. We have not had one single flea in the house or on them since last summer when I did the too long time.

No guessing required Bumblebeez, just read the package :)

As explained above, if you have a flea infestation use it monthly. I wouldn't push right to the limit on 90 days either. I use it every other month in summer and every 3 months in winter. But it's a good idea to read the label on any insecticide or medication.

I was too lax in giving the Frontline. I should have given it prophylacticly in the summer months and not wait till I saw any fleas. I called the Merial company and they basically said the same thing and also the product probably was legit if it was made in France. I also talked to the Maak company, but the guy I talked to said it was okay to give again now. Of course I know it's not okay before 30 days. The house was thoroughly vacuumed and the cats are being combed ..Good advice to wash the comb after each cat. I keep scalding water to put the fleas in. This has been a sporatic problem brought in by the dog who has been dead five years. She was treated with either Revolution or Advantage..can't remember but that was my first exposure since my cats never go out.

I am my own worst enemy. I know why the Frontline didn't work as I thought it should. My vacuum broke a few weeks ago and I decided not to get another one, but to go with a deluxe Shark carpet sweeper which was actually picking up more cat hair than the vacumm. I have all wood floors and antique braided, oriental and hooked rugs everywhere and the vacuum did a number on them. But I'm guessing the carpet sweeper, even tho it IS the deluxe, isn't picking up the flea eggs. So I got my mother's Electrolux and am using that till I get this under control. I'm combing them all too each a few times a day.

I have been using Frontline Plus for a long time. It is not working as good as it used to. I have tried Revolution for the cats, and it does not work as good either. The other meds don't seem to work as well either. I have not tried Comfortis, because I am afraid to. I have used lemon diswashing detergent on my dogs and that does work if you get the soap real thick and leave it on a couple of minutes, then wash off really well. I have short haired dogs and it does not seem to effect their coat. Surely there is something out there for cats that work. I am tired of throwing money out cause these products are all expensive. I can't wash my cats, they would eat me up alive! I have two cats, and two dogs that come in and out.
