I think humans often misinterpret animal communication as telepathic, when it is actually driven by body language. Animals, dogs in particular, have an uncanny ability to read our body language, often with a skill level much greater than our own. We do not perceive the body language that passes from animal to animal, or from animal to human, because we are largely dependent on the spoken word.

I think many people interpret this as telepathy. I also think this is why some trainers (aka Cesar Milan) are so successful with ammending behavior in animals. We call them "whisperers", but they are simply communicating to animals in a way that animals understand.

I believe in it, I think. Ever since I saw that 60 minutes segment (years ago on TV) where they filmed this puppy (24 and 7). The owner was on an extended vacation in Europe. The film of the puppy showed him very depressed and shut down while the owner was gone. The day (the hour/minute) the owner got on the plane to come hom, the puppy started very energetically pacing in front of this door, back and forth, back and forth as if he knew the owner was on his way until the owner was in the house. It was VERY impressive.

I have watched our dogs and I now know when DH is on his way home if I care to take notice. The dogs go to the front window and are MUCH more attentive all of a sudden.

Not sure if I will say what other kind of communication I have seen. I know that we as humans give our pups "clues" with our body language so that they learn to read that when we sometimes might thing they are reading our mind.

Very interesting topic though because I also believe in ESP between humans. Too many times have I been concentrating on something in public and then somehow look up and in a certain direction to find someone looking/staring at me and vice versa.

I know they have done brain scans showing that when someone says for example "happy" in chinese, the same "signature" of glucose movement (or glucose usage, forget what it is called) shows up on the scan as when someone says this in English. That means that if there is some type of wave length associated with this brain activity, it could very conceivably be communicated non-verbally between people.

I can buy communicating through understanding behavior, what I don't like is people who claim the dog actually told them something in "words".

My husband worked with a guy whose wife considered herself and "animal communicator". They stopped by once, and I asked her what was up with my male cat. She spent 10 minutes or so scratching his neck and staring deeply into his eyes. When she was done, she announced, "He had a LOT to say!" When we asked her to dish the dirt, she said, "He asked me to keep it confidential."

Yeah, right.

I don't have any idea what goes on but sometimes it is strange.
Here is something that happened to my parents elderly male cockapoo years ago.

Cubby was my fathers beloved dog. My Dad would spend hours holding him in his lap everyday while they watched tv.

My father developed prostate cancer and had to have surgery to have his prostate removed. He was in the hospital for almost two weeks. While he was gone, Cubby started having some physical problems so I took him to the vet..and he had to have his prosate removed! Such empathy! How would he know?

As with several other major questions, I am agnostic on this issue. I certainly believe that animals perceive and understand a great deal more about us than we are generally willing to or comfortable in admitting, but I don't know if one of their means of perception is telepathic. It might be. I'm not going to rule out the possibility.

I do talk to my animals mentally, and I have believed at times that the animal with whom I was communicating was hearing every thought I was sending. I have not been as successful at receiving telepathic communications from them, though there have been a few times when I believe it has happened, most notably when I ask a new animal his/her name.

Maybe it's all in my own head. Maybe not. I prefer to believe that the animals hear me no matter how I speak to them. It just makes me feel good.

Animals communicate and humans state that they use "words", but that is our interpretation, since we are used to verbalize our thought.
Mental images sometimes can't really be translated, even among the human species how do you express emotions? Words often fail, but that doesn't mean the feelings are not real.

I just came in from mowing the lawn and the dogs were all sleeping - I said 'I mowed the lawn!' and they acted like I had said 'lets go for a walk' or 'how about a steak.' Much excitement with helicopter tails followed by a symphony of squeakie toys going off. They respond to the cues we give them. Tone of voice.

Of course animals don't think in words, I've read that they most likely think in 'pictures' or feelings. And that makes sense and explains why they don't generalize well. So hand signals are usually easier than verbal commands for them. But interesting that certain tones elicit certain behavior or responses. I guess I lost track of the topic here :-)

I'm a believer. I think there's a whole realm of intelligence/communication out there that we know little or nothing about.

I have a book by Amelia Kincaid (I think I spelled that wrong) that has a most impressive foreword by Dr. Bernie Siegel, the Yale cardiologist. When his family's cat was missing, he contacted the author (thousands of miles away), and she was able to communicate with the cat and find out where she was. The book got me psyched up to try it...if I can ever sufficiently quiet my mind. (That's another issue!)

Re experiences, I've had two dream visits from dogs who had just died. One was a silent experience; the other included words. In neither case was I aware when I went to bed that the dog had died.

And I can tell you this: When my dad died in the hospital, back at home his pug, Dukie, stared at his bed and barked and barked. That night he wailed all night long. It was a sound we had never heard from him. My dad had been in the hospital for weeks before he died, and Dukie hadn't reacted to his absence until the day he passed away.

Two years later my mother died at home. A few hours later, Dukie fixed his now sightless eyes on her chair and barked and barked. That night he wailed all night longÂthe same sound he made when my dad died.

I am an animal communicater, but a hit or miss one because a person has to have a quiet mind and the animal has to have something to say. I've gotten feelings, pictures and even words. Body language is one animal communiation, I wouldn't limit myself in my relationships with the varied animals I come in contact with. I've taken an amimal communiation workshop in Pt Reys with Penelope Smith,not every one relates the same.
For me emotion seems to be a catlist and I have spoken to my animals that have crossd over. It gives me comfort to know they arefine even without me.

Acorn... I have just read Penelope Smith's Animal Talk and Debbie Mc Gillivary's CIG to Pet Psychic Communication. I was considering doing a workship. There are tons of people who believe in this, I am actually surprised at the number of skeptics. How did you find the workshop... was it beneficial? How much did it cost? Thanks :O)

I just read a book by Temple Grandin, a human with Autism. She thinks in pictures and not in words like most people do. She has developed the skill of understanding the needs of some animals, and attributes it to her theory that animals also think nonverball - in pictures, sounds, and smells. She is a facinating person who has built a great career for herself (designing humane slaughter systems for meat production) and she shares her thoughts on our realtionships with animals with the assistance of a cowriter. One of the blurbs on the cover says it all - every page teaches you something.

Sidetrip: I remember Temple Grandin as a subject in a book I read a million years ago by Dr. Oliver Sacks. It was either 'The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat' or 'An Anthropologist on Mars.' I've heard Temple is not a very good writer, which makes sense, but that her level of functioning is very high (the methods her mother used are covered in the Sacks book). I do think that I need to pick up a copy of her book regardless of what the reviews say :-)

The workshop helped me, I am not the best in classroom situations, so I got more as time went on. Some people got it right away. I was glad to meet others who felt the same way and getting validation for something that I've done all my life without being called crazy was a good thing. The first workshop is $125.00 for a two day workshop. There is a nice hostel in Pt Reyes, camping and motels.

Another skeptic here. The premise of telepathy makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Furthermore, scientists haven't proven it exists in humans despite years of research so how can supposed animal communicators "know" what they're sensing are the communications of the animal in question?

The best I think you can ascribe to these people is that they are perhaps much more knowledgeable about animal behavior than the average person so they can figure out what's going on in the human/animal interaction from their questioning of the human. Or, they are sensitive to what the human WANTS/NEEDS to hear.

Consider this, God, in Genesis created all animals to be companions for Adam (man/us) only after sin entered the world was that bond corrupted.

So yes companions are meant to communicate both verbally and non verbally. My cat meows at me to enhance communication but to her brother she uses a telepathic link along with body language and smell.
