Newcomer's layout for feedback

Hi all newbie here. Posting a draft of my proposed layout for feedback from this wonderful forum. Designing the kitchen myself, with help from people like you. Some background:

* Wide galley (~11Â x 14.5Â) + breakfast nook (~7Â x. 10.5Â) in a c. 1910 three-story semi-detached house with finished basement.

* Starting from scratch. The only thing that weÂve done are the floorsÂhardwoodÂbefore we moved in (but not in the breakfast nook, where there will probably be terracotta tile).

* Mostly a one-cook kitchen, though DH does cook sometimes, so call it a 1.5-cook kitchen. Plus, heÂs always in there with me helping, for example, with prep work.

* ItÂs important that there be room for the both of us, and that he have somewhere to hang out while I cook, so we can talk, be together, etc. The same applies to my daughter, when sheÂs home from university. In the attached layout, I see the breakfast nook fulfilling this function. It can also be where guests gather while I cook.

* Entertain 4-6 people at a time, generally, though with a proper kitchen I can see this increasing.

* Function is more important than form to me. I love to cook, and will be inspired to cook even more in a kitchen that works for me. Current one, inherited from previous owners, doesnÂt.

* Considered moving the sink and/or range to the opposite (interior) wall, but after discussion in a separate posting, have decided not to do. The range as shown in the layout is farther along the wall than where it is now. The sink and DW are now in different spots than as shown in the layout, but within a couple of feet of there.

* Not thrilled about having a corner sink, but not sure what else to do w/o losing precious counter space b/t the sink and range.

* No windows along the walls of the kitchen proper, though have lots of warm light from breakfast nook. Considering putting in a window on the exterior wall, maybe beside the baking zone (also the pasta-making zone).

* Appliances: started here, in terms of planning. So far, have chosen the 36" AG RNB Blue Star range, and likely a Miele 24" DW (though may have to go smaller?). Fridge and wall oven are still being researched.

* Wrt the fridge, was thinking of a 36" CD SxS, but could also contemplate towers or all fridge/all freezer, if thereÂs room.

* Not sure yet where to put the MW, but want it close to the fridge. Need only a small one.

* Cabinets: want mostly base cabinets with drawers, and some uppers for storage of glasses. Want to keep the look open, but good storage is a must.

Please note:

* The DR is directly behind the kitchen. I want to keep the wall.

* There is another ~ 2Â of depth to the breakfast nook not shown on the paper, b/c the paper wasnÂt big enough for the scale I used.

* The breakfast nook is ~ 14.5" lower than the kitchen via a step (shown by dotted line). I want to extend the kitchenÂs floor plate about 12", which will enable me to create the baking zone.

* Will move the doors that go out to the back yard, or flip the opening door of the set (your typical glass sliding) to be on the other side of where it is now, which is closest to the exterior wall. This way, traffic flow will move down through the centre of the room and right outside.

* There is a bump-out on the interior wall of ~ 7" (deep). ItÂs a chimney breast thatÂs been covered and is not in use. IÂm hoping we can remove it and thus go back right to the wall. If not, cabinets will stick out those 7" for a 5Â 5" run of wall.

* Layout doesnÂt show uppers yet, b/c I want to get the essentials in place first.

IÂll stop there, as itÂs already a lot of information, and IÂm keen to see what others think ...

The first thing that catches my eye is the corner sink -- a big problem in that you won't be able to stand at the sink and load the DW.

I like the way the peninsula separates the nook from the range side of the kitchen. That's good for safety and foot-traffic issues. And I commend your restraint for not trying to shoehorn an island into a kitchen that clearly isn't meant for one.

I'd like to see what would happen if you push the range up the exterior wall to where the gas line is shown, then put the sink and DW down near the peninsula end. Make that peninsula into prep space.

I agree that the corner sink is going to be a hassle with the DW in its current location. I also fear the pantry space is too small, and having them separated by 9 feet is a long ways. Also... I would go for the 48" fridge, unless you have a second or beverage fridge somewhere else.

Could the DW go to the left of the sink, with 12" drawers separating the sink and DW? Those would be great for linens, wraps (foil, baggies, etc).

Could you move your sink and dishwasher to the long wall on the left and put your fridge at the end where you currently have the 36" drawers in the base cabinet? You could have a blind cabinet lazy susan in the corner where the sink is now. The would also free up more space on the right hand wall so you could increase the 30" drawers to 36" and possibly add another narrow cabinet near the stove for cooking oils/spices/condiments or verticle tray storage.

Your kitchen and breakfast room spaces are similar in size to what we are currently building.

I didn't see a place for trash. Did I miss it?

venice, i am sure if i totally understand layout is breakfast nook 7' or 9' wide. i think 7' is too narrow if you are wanting to entertain 4 to 6 or more. Is the baking zone taking more square feet out of the breakfast nook? also, what about putting range in sink corner? Moving sink to 36" base area with trash pull out on one side and DW on the other. just some ideas to think about.

Thanks to all for your feedback. So good to have all these extra eyeballs on it. Will work on new ideas based on these comments, see what emerges and post the a revised layout or two.

As you can see, the sink location is the biggest challenge, and its been driving me nutty ever since I started working on this.

Sweeby (whose test I took and now have pages and pages of notes as a result thank you), Ill try your suggested switch, but have a Q related to it: how easy/hard will it be to relocate the drain line down at the end of the wall, from where it now is (essentially in the corner)? I also want to see what it does to the range visually, as I had planned to have it roughly centred on the wall to boost its effect as a focal point, given my sad lack of windows.

Alywa, in your model, the DW would be exactly where it is now, and which is rather handy in some ways, so I did try it, but was concerned that Id lose the 36" of cabinets there. Im going to try it again, though, just to see

Arlosmom, looked into this, but decided not to go this route, owing to having to move the drain line that distance. Also, in moving the fridge that wall, was concerned that I wouldnt have enough swing room for the door on the one side, which is where the landing area for groceries would be, and which would thus be blocked by the door (and I dont want it to swing out the other way, b/c it could brain someone walking through the doorway). Id be interested in seeing what youve done or are thinking of doing, given that we have similar spacesits challenging!

Trashno, mo_sgal, you didnt miss it. Havent put it in yet somewhere near the sink, Im thinking one more thing to fit in aargh will do so in the next iteration

Paddytc, the nook is 105" wide, and 7 deep. Weve got room for four comfortably, six if they like each other a lot. Any more than that, and I wont use it for guests (they can mill about in the living and dining areas), though it could work during the summer, as everyone could just spill out into the backyard. The baking zone takes 12" in depth from the nook, but its placement doesnt interfere with nook function, as nothing can really happen against that wall; also, my baking zone is v. important to me. Its actually a baking and pasta-making zone, and I need lots of counter space for the latter.

    Please keep the ideas coming!

    Back to the graph paper

That makes more sense with the 10'5" wide. Good luck with drawings. I know I spent many days/nights with the graph paper.

    Both sides are 30" deep.

bmorepanic, thanks for the sketch. Making the cabinets 30" deep is interesting. More storage, I guess, and work space, too.

What is "drop," and what would the tall cabinet be used for?

Also, for the pantry, I read on this post that many found a deep pantry made it difficult to access items in the back. Have you found this?

Drop meaning drop zone for "les junque" and/or message board/family calendar. Cell phone chargers and stuff. Could also function as landing zone for the oven.

The pantry is big enough to have two doors. I would be tempted to get the utility cabinet version, the door shelf units from a third party and line the back with 18" deep shelves. It's right on the border for a one door, drywall built pantry - which are fairly inexpensive. Sort of a step-in able pantry.

I'd put pots in the tall cabinet on shelves, mixing bowls and such like. Spices, cook books, baking dishes.... I love open shelves, so that's what I would probably make it. I think ... not cabinets over the counter run between the sink and cooktop corner - altho I might do a tool rail. the tall cabinet is a way to replace that storage. It's a bit more storage on that side of the room, but certainly not required.

I liked what sweeby suggested about moving the cooktop. This is one draft of that.

I don't care for corners much. While they "look" like counterspace, they don't tend to work well for me because I can't reach back into one. I am happier with 4 feet straight.

I moved the ref and mw down to the breakfast side of the room, because I thought it was used a lot.
