Last Resort..........Bleeding Doberman

I have a 8 yr old Dobie with a bleeding disorder its

called Von Willabrandt's Disease. Dobies are known for

this disease. Anyway she nick the left side of her nose

and lower lip. We are having a hard time stoping the bleeding. We are back and forth to the Vet trying anything. Last night we were at the Vet at 10pm to midnight. He was cauterizeing the blood vessels. It

started bleeding again in certain spots. The vet said

the skin is so thin in the area that's its hard to stop the bleeding. He mention about puttting her down because

of this. So as a last resort does anyone have any tips

that might help? PLEASE!!!!!!

Hi, I am so sorry about your dog's problem. I did a search and found the following:

"You will likely be able to control mild bleeding yourself by applying prolonged pressure. In other circumstances, veterinary care such as cautery or sutures may be required. Severe bleeding episodes are treated by administering a source of von Willebrand factor through a transfusion. If your dog requires surgery, your veterinarian may recommend a transfusion pre-operatively as a precaution, depending on the severity of the bleeding disorder, and the type of surgery."

Below is the website I copied the info from, I hope your vet will be able to help your dog.

Thanks for the link. The Vet did discuss this with us but
the transfusion with only last a few weeks and can run
thousands of dollars. It seems like we are hitting a brick
wall which ever way we turn. I feel so bad for her. Thanks.

Clubm, I'm sorry your poor dog has to deal with this, and you, too.

My SIL has von Willebrands. When she had her babies, they gave her Desmopressin, which is a drug usually prescribed to help prevent bedwetting. But it also does something to help stop the bleeding. I have no idea if this drug is safe for dogs, however. If it were, it seems likely that your vet would know about it. But since it seems as if you are at the point where you are leaving no stone unturned, I thought I would mention it.

I hope all goes well and somehow the bleeding is stopped. This must be so hard on you.

I googled Desmopressin and what I read the drug has an
effect for 8 to 12 hours that's all. So I would think
she would start bleeding again. I will mention to the
Vet tomorrow. He is off today..........He said to
call him Tuesday to let him know how she is doing.
    Thanks

gardenweb's spam filter won't let me post the email address, but google Special Needs Dobermans.

They know *everything* about Dobes, & they're completely devoted to them.

    I wish you the best.

Sorry posted to the wrong thread. There is something they do before surgery on affected dogs, I'm thinking vitamin k injections to help increase clotting but I'm not sure

Just an update. I received an application from Special
Needs for Doberman's today. Unfortunately my Dobie is
getting weaker and hasn't eaten anything as of yet for
today. I also think her kidneys are shutting down. Urine
ia turning dark. I'm finding it so hard to let go and I
know I have to for her sake. It's just very difficult.
    Thanks for all your help.
