Dog's teeth

I'm wondering about my dog's teeth, and whether they can possibly last his entire life at this rate!

We have a 10-month-old Toller (retriever). He is a chewer - he chews on stuff all day long - toys, bones, treats, sticks. Chewing is his hobby, his passion, his joy. Thankfully, he's not interested in chewing our possessions or inappropriate stuff around the house.

I've read enough warnings about issues with tooth damage from tennis balls that he's only allowed them during supervised ball chasing sessions, and we're phasing them out anyway as they wear out.

For treats, I give him the occasional pig ear, pizzle stick, pig tail, sinew, and so forth. I avoid rawhide treats.

He's on a raw food diet (not a prepared commercial BARF diet product), and among all the other raw goodies, he gets meaty bones or raw chicken parts almost daily. While he completely finishes the chicken bones, I usually throw away the hard beef leg bones once he's consumed all of the meat, cartilage, and marrow.

His teeth are gorgeous - I tell people that they even glow in the dark - and a woman stopped us in the woods one day to admire him, and she said, "Really, I'm a dental technical, and he has fantastic teeth!"

At this rate, can his teeth possibly last for another 10 years or more? I'm only half joking. We had terriers for 15 years, and they chewed on toys and bones too, but they were like surgeons when they chewed - there was a purpose - finish the treat, kill and remove the squeaky from the toy - and when they were done, they moved on to the next fun activity.

Any thoughts from folks with chewers out there?

Thanks,

Susan
