The conventional drain fittings that can be disconnected are properly called "Slip Joints". you may use slip joint tubing on all piping from the sink drain basket to the trap, but code only allows a maximum of one(1) slip joint on the discharge side of the trap. That one fitting is usually the Trap Adapter which is a transition fitting from slip joint "Tube size" to IPS pipe size.

And for the record, both PVC & ABS DWV pipe are manufactured to the IPS sched.40 size standards

I ended up using pvc although the trap I bought is a two pieces kind.
