Hi April, the background wall was a neutral beige/cream. I painted the grillwork pattern in a transparent antique gold, ragging it off as I went. This makes a more interesting texture and softer effect than solid paint. I probably increased the contrast in the picture, but the actual effect is very soft; it's a bedroom, after all. It was a way of having something of interest on this asymmetrical wall, and not trying to compete with a bay view out the windows.
