The big debate in our family is shelves or no shelves! Thought about stainless steel, thought about cutting a dark wood beam to match the one on the ceiling but...I am so prone to clutter that I am thinking no shelves, just art. Would love some feedback from you all.

As it turns out, you would have enjoyed it but obviously didn't need it. As a fellow clutterbug (I have a theory that IT actually follows ME around, like the miasma around Pigpen on Peanuts), but also because it would look so good there, my feedback is for art.

I love your space. It makes me feel beachy, like sunburn on my nose and sand in my bathingsuit and between my toes. You are so lucky to get to live there!

I think you must have started before I started coming here everyday (cuz I have nothing but time on my hands...), so I dont' know/remember the details. Did you guys DIY, or just have a remarkable vision and commission all that. So unique!

Such a personal space. I'd live with it a while before adding shelves, but think I'd prefer SS over dark wood, and maybe just fairly narrow to accommodate art pieces, & the odd little treasure.

I am sure this is a lot more information then you were asking for but here it goes...It wasn't a DIY persae. I played with a design forever because the space was difficult to work with. Then got some input, then hired someone to do the drawing for the carpenter.
I knew that I wanted reclaimed wood, found a guy in our state who had it and I went and picked it out, hired a carpenter to work with the wood, build the cabinets and order the drawers.
I ordered the floors from a company in our state too, had them install it, and my brother and I dyed and oiled the floors ourselves. (That's a whole 'nother story)!
The concrete countertops were made by a local artist who had worked with concrete but never made a countertop. And the stainless steel counter tops and backspash were made by another local company.
The painting was done by my brother (who is a painter by trade) and had been suggested by a color specialist (who also gave me a lot of helpful feedback on my ideas) and I am so glad she did. I would have never picked it but love it!
All the appliances, sink, faucet, handles, pantry, etc I found with lots of research, and also feedback from this site. I am sure it would have been a lot easier to hire someone to be a contractor, but I guess that I have learned I am a little obsessive (to say the least) and had to be involved hands on.
I think I will follow the advice and wait on the shelves, put up the art and see how it goes for a while. Hope this info didn't bore you to tears, guess I needed to "recap" for my mental health after such a big project!

Not bored at all. I just wonder when I see a room/house that is so outside the box, what the process was to get there. I feel I am a fairly creative/artistic person, give me a backyard, and I can create a vision, but four walls and I'm non-plussed. We're still in the starting gate of a whole house reno, and I am terrified of 'wasting' this opportunity to make it our own. I love unique and non-predictable- you've successfully achieved both- congratulations!

I really think it is an organic process. Finding the best way for using your space and looking at pictures and books and seeing what catches your eye. Kind of a process of elimination since there is so much stuff out there.
I really enjoyed looking through British and European magazines to get ideas too.
I know I made a list of priorities and had to keep refering to it. And finding someone who knows your taste to use as a sounding board (I think so often designers try and push you to thier tastes!) Looking forward to hearing how your progress goes!
